Rescue Escapes in Niagara Falls Helicopter Incident

In Niagara Falls New York on May 15 two men escaped death during a rescue of a woman clinging to a rock above the Niagara River Horseshoe. A second helicopter soon performed a dramatic rescue after the first ditched into the swift current. The first craft, pontoon equipped, struck a wave that smashed its tail rotor on a rock and sank. The woman, Mrs Jeannette Bugay of Niagara Falls, aged 25, suffered shock and exposure.

Woman saved from Niagara Falls by helicopter crew

Mrs. Bugay, hospitalized after a nervous breakdown, was rescued near the Horseshoe Falls by a helicopter crew from Bell Aircraft. Herbert Sedita and John Paonessa, park workers, aided as the craft dragged her and two pilots to safety. Her husband Sigmund and two children were listed in the story.

Missing Children Case Yet Unresolved At Rock Island

Bugay said his wife vanished yesterday afternoon amid a nervous breakdown while he described long work hours and mounting debts. He claimed she feared for the children and insisted she never left home. The Goat Island Three Sisters bridge approach remained barricaded to the public as authorities investigated.

Surgery fatal to Siamese twins in Alberta

A 20 year old mother in Tofield Alberta endured a tragic operation to separate her six month old Siamese twins Brenda and Beverley Townsend. Despite preoperative tests and hope, the heart sharing and liver separation proved insurmountable and both babies died within hours. The chief surgeon Dr Hardiey Allin called the operation a gamble with three unavoidable hazards. The father witnessed the procedure as Dr William Freebury who delivered the babies earlier attended. The mother Betty Townsend expressed faith in Gods will as a comfort.

Labor Council Accuses City of Deception in Bid Case

The labor group contends the city acted with fraud and bad faith in a bid process for a contract. An amended petition cites alleged collusion to award the contract to Bell Braden Barker Gilvin. Hearing on the original petition was postponed after lawyers found no cause for action. City officials were not served with citations and bids had not been advertised as required. See CITY, Page 4.

Industrial potentials high he says Amarillo welcome

Earl Allmond new industrial wholesale manager of the chamber of commerce said Amarillo has great industrial potentialities due to the market it serves and its transportation location. He arrived Saturday and will be introduced to the executive board and committees this week. He came from Dallas and has spent 25 years in the Midwest industrial area. He noted twice this spring it has rained in Amarillo and joked about luck.

Testifies Accused Killer Mistreated Her Daughter

In Amarillo 1949 murder trial of Ewald Johnson for Tex Thornton's slaying, Diana Johnson's mother Mrs. R Heany testified about Johnson's mistreatment and family troubles. She described Diana runaways, Johnson's drinking, and a controversial letter from Diana's sister. The testimony aimed to show Johnson's character while jurors weighed the case and possible verdicts.

Santa Fe Lays Off 325 Today

Santa Fe plans layoff of about 325 non operating workers, mostly machine shop staff and transportation clerks, with 125 affected in Amarillo. Borger, Canadian, Waynoka, Pampa and Shattuck machine shops to run on skeleton crews while a few trains continue through Amarillo. Union leader Osborne calls the action a morale test. officials declined comment.

Too Much Pull Can Be Harmful

Syracuse reports Anthony Pambroni 71 of Skanetateles pulling a weed in his garden when it freed with force. He fell backward suffering skull, back, six ribs, an arm, a shoulder and a collar bone fractures. He is listed in fair condition at Onondaga General Hospital.

Boy's Pet Cocker Is Shot to Death

Mrs John Nichols of 3704 Fountain mourns as her seven year old cocker spaniel named Johnnie is shot and dies after being let out near home at 7 am Neighbors heard the shot but the shooter remains unidentified Johnnie was visiting his grandmother and did not witness the incident leaving a heartbroken family.

Rites Set for One of Four Crash Dead

Funeral plans emerged for Wynona Parker as other crash victims Leon Rusk Lloyd Garrett and Julia Couch remained unscheduled. Injured include J L Dunn LaNell Brown and James Hendricks with varying conditions and hospital stays. Rusk a Tune Wranglers leader depicted with family in Long Beach Cal while Parker's relatives in Plainview Amrillo and Elk City are noted. Freed US Fliers Head for Manila

Two American airmen, prisoners of the Chinese Communists for 18 months, began a flight from Hong Kong aboard a navy plane to Manila after being picked up at sea by a destroyer. Marine Master Elmer C. Bender of Cincinnati and Navy Chief Electrician William C. Smith of Long Beach, California, appeared relieved and were to undergo physicals. They said a Chinese official warned of a coming U.S. revolution and that they would have been released soon.

May 15 Washington Ben H Guill the first Republican from Texas in 19 years took the oath to represent Texas 18th District. He won a special election to fill the term of Democrat Gene Worley who was named to the U S tax court. Speaker Sam Rayburn administered the oath with applause from both parties.

Hollywood star Jimmy Cagney suffered a flesh wound after tripping while stalking a coyote behind his Coldwater Canyon home. He told police the .22 rifle discharged as he fell, injuring him while attempting to manage the nuisance animal for his dogs.
