Amarillo 100 good will evangelists toured the Pecos Valley stopping in Canyon Umbarger and Dawn before arriving in Hereford at 10:35 am. Crowds welcomed them with parades and brief programs while local officials and chamber leaders presided over receptions and surprise events.

In Dallas on May 15, character witnesses testified in the John W. Brady murder case over the stabbing death of Lehlia Highsmith in Austin last November. H. Sullivan, a Dallas oil man and uncle by marriage to Highsmith’s mother, said Brady’s reputation was good though he claimed he never met the victim. Also appearing were Judge Ben F. Looney, Mrs. Max Bickler, Ed R. Kane, and Alex Pope.
Secretary Stimson testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that the United States made no hazardous sacrifice in reducing its big cruiser program under the London naval treaty. He cited naval experts who supported parity with Britain and explained the two cruiser classes offer a safer, balanced approach.
Dallas May 13 The general conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South rejected a written constitution by 188 to 205. It would have required a two thirds vote and ratification by three fourths of annual conferences. The conference charged to newspapers for unfair display of bishops’ complaints and criticized some coverage. Bishops including Cannon Jr faced censure while four others were cleared.
The city health department launches a large scale rat control drive with Jack Wyatt as division commander and supply sergeant. Enlistment forms and campaign information will be distributed. the city bears most costs except bait under one dollar. The U S Biological Survey will supply a commander in chief gratis.
The Creager Colliers libel suit defense rested at 11 a m in Brownsville Texas on May 13, prompting immediate rebuttal testimony from the plaintiff. Turner behind record Lindbergh schedule for a transcontinental flight and Col Roscoe Turner Los Angeles aviator left Wichita for New York after refueling in Texas. Linin elected Port Arthur as 1931 East Texas Chamber convention city by acclamation.
Architects prepared to report on tentative courthouse plans as the Potter County commissioners and a board of equalization meet. Officials expect the courthouse issue to be addressed late in the session. Mrs. Ethel Harriman Russell, daughter of Mrs. J Borden Harriman, plans to join the professional stage after prior successes as an author.
U S District Judge James Wilson and staff rush to wind up war risk insurance matters and set trial dates as grand jury prepares. A full week is reserved for criminal cases the first in the district, with A D A Alec Mood overseeing war risk prosecutions and grand jury duties intensifying amid secrecy. Galveston population boosted to 51 939, an 18 percent rise from 1920.
Grimly determined posses with police and soldiers search Des Moines for the attacker who killed 9 year old Evelyn Lee after she went missing Saturday. The body was found on a vacant lot and officials said she was attacked and choked. Military police from Fort Des Moines joined the manhunt.
F Scott McBride of the Anti Saloon League tells the Senate Lobby Committee that stuffing referenda ballots is unnecessary and questions the legal binding effect of such measures. He faces questions from Senator Blaine as Caraway limits debate while McBride disputes divine origins of his organization and recalls past Illinois referenda and League guidance to dry voters.
National Guardsmen found typewritten notices telling black residents to evacuate within 24 hours or have homes destroyed and a contractor to discharge black workers within 36 hours. Col. L S Davidson pledged protection, warning any riots would be met with deadly force. The military court of inquiry pursues leads from last night’s disturbances.

Heavy rains and hail crossed parts of the Panhandle last night with most rainfall east and north of Amarillo. Perryton recorded 2.10 inches in 16 hours and Shamrock saw near seven inches with hail at times, causing localized crop damage and halting highway 66 eastbound service. City forester noted no tree or shrub damage and praised park roses thriving after the weather.
