West Texas experiences cloudy weather with local thunderstorms in the southern portions tonight and Wednesday. New Mexico sees showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and tonight with warmer readings in the northeast tonight. the outlook for Wednesday remains unsettled. Temperatures reach 56 to 66 degrees by 1 PM.
A Texas report shows state government costs rose from 33.5 million in 1920 to 103.7 million in 1930, a 209.5 percent jump. Highways and education drove most growth, with highway spending totaling 44.6 million and education 18.5 million. much highway cost reflects permanent improvements rather than annual outlays.
Mrs. Pat Malone and Mrs. Gil Lockard won the Amarillo bridge championship after four weeks of play against 54 teams. They defeated Mr. and Mrs. George Shannon last night by 1 800 points over 24 rubbers. The Junior Welfare League sponsored the event to fund a children’s clinic. Prize items included bridge contest accessories.
Dr. T. E. Horner and Mrs. Horner with Mr. and Mrs. Ed Mattocks of Atchison Kansas visit Amarillo to see their son Tom Horner a News-Globe reporter. Dr. Horner a leading Northeastern Kansas physician. Mattocks assistant cashier of The Exchange National Bank. They plan travel to Carlsbad El Paso Albuquerque then return. may stay a month.
Hopewell reporters relay two new leads in the Lindbergh baby case. Col. H Norman Schwarzkopf states a Texas resident sent photos claimed to be the child, but the family says they are not. A bottle found near Scotland Light prompts a coast guard and police search off Long Branch.
Judge J D Moore of the 98th district court temporarily enjoined four East Texas oil operators from producing oil in excess of railroad commission orders. The injunctions were issued in suits brought by the attorney general against A H Tarver Wainwright West Oil Company Ltd P D Bowlen and F T Shelton. The last three defendants were named in one suit. The suits were filed independently of East Texas investigation by civil and military authorities.
Charles E. Rosendahl commander of the Akron piloted the giant airship through a night of terrible storms over West Texas, steering to safety as crews reported continuous peril and awe at the craft’s resilience in turbulent skies.
Albert Francois Lebrun was elected president of France by 633 votes to 114 for Paul Faure with 49 blank. He will go to Elysee Palace to honor Paul Doumer, then to the Unknown Soldier tomb and Luxembourg Palace to receive diplomats and officials.
A retail merchants loan bank of Amarillo was proposed at a morning meeting of the Amarillo Credit Association. Forty two local merchants subscribed 6000 dollars to found the bank, aiming to pool debts and reestablish credit with 12 month loan terms and 10 percent carrying charges. Directors named include R D Kirk Horace Russell Walter Blackburn and others.
Stanley A. Puryear was indicted in Memphis on charges of murdering his wife and daughter, victims of an ax slayer, and fatally shooting a man named Will Jamieson.
Washington May 10 The American minister to Sweden John M Morehead urged before a Senate committee a twentieth amendment to permit liquor sale under strict government control and only in states that want it He favored the Bratt system used in Sweden a government monopoly with rationing through allotment books He noted little difference from the Raskob Smith plan but argued the Bratt system offers a defined plan and would bar private liquor traffic in any adopting state.
Senate action proposed a 4 per cent beer tax as a substitute for many levies in the tax bill. Senator Bingham said the beer tax would raise about 376 million dollars annually and could replace admissions communications radio and phonograph levies, postal, auto and income tax increases. Also plans for resumed stock market hearings next week were announced by Chairman Norbeck. The House Immigration Committee voted to report favorably the Dies bill excluding alien Communists.
President Hoover announced he would submit to related government departments a plan to authorize silver payments for foreign debts under specified limits. The move aims to address international financial obligations while balancing domestic interests and treasury constraints.

Johannesburg South Africa May 10 John M. Long arrested for illegal stay and suspected in the kidnapping of Mrs Neil Donnelly of Kansas City. He will be deported to New York Friday aboard the S S West Cawthorn.
Potter County Democrats selected 12 delegates to the state convention in Houston on May 24 while Republicans planned to name ten envoys to the Mineral Wells GOP gathering the same day. Officials preside over sessions as precincts nominate delegates to state and national meetings.
Dr. L H Martin was shot in the abdomen on a highway luring ruse west of Borger as he tried to flee robbers who had lured him out. They took $12 and warned of about $150 as he had no recent bank deposit before fleeing in a trailing car. The wound was not life threatening.
Admiral William V. Pratt said the Akron had no intent to land in Texas during last night's storm on its west coast voyage. He noted radio offers of landing facilities from ground stations were intercepted but rejected by the commanding officers.
