Austin May 9 Attempts to bar state supported colleges from using any portion of their local funds to create new positions were blocked in the Senate. An amendment by Sen. Tom DeBerry Bogota to limit local funds was defeated while the bill requires itemized local fund expenditures and submission to the state comptroller. The Senate replaced the rural school aid bill with an $8 million biennial appropriation and differences will be settled in conference. The House previously proposed a $3 hunting license, now raised to $3 for out of county hunting while in-county hunting remains free, and a $1.10 fishing license with in-county and touching streams access.
Poona May 9 Mahatma Gandhi began a three week fast in protest against treatment of the lowest classes. He shows nausea symptoms as a Bombay physician is summoned. The 63 year old nationalist was moved from Yeroda prison where he had served 16 months after starting the fast.

William Trevillian, executive of W T Rawleigh Co, agreed to be kidnapped as part of a $40 000 ransom plan. Two alleged abductors, William Stubbe and La Verne Moore, were captured near Durand with help from Jack and Red Schultz of La Salle. Sheriff E J Welter and Chicago federal investigators led the operation.
