Alton Brown, 38, son of Mr and Mrs A H Brown, died at a local hospital after being struck by a truck while crossing a street. Millard Gilliam, of the awning company, drove the truck. No charges filed. The body held at N B Griggs and Sons funeral chapel pending arrangements.
The Globe reprints Arthur Brisbane views on China and Japan, Lloyd George’s take on Chiang Kai Shek, and the idea of a “giant Japan” built from China. It contrasts Chinese factions, warns of risk to New Orleans flood defenses, and notes stock market boom with rising seat prices and high trading volumes in April.
The Panhandle Geological Society will hold its regular meeting Friday at 7 p.m. in the Roundup room of Hotel Amarillo. Everett H. Bradley and H. E. Crum, both geologists and oil men from Amarillo, will lead the program.
The Red Cross and Mississippi officials, with U S Secretary Hoover present, approved a 500000 dollar appropriation for crop rehabilitation in the flooded Mississippi area at a May conference in Vicksburg.
The forecast calls for tonight and Saturday to be partly cloudy. Temperature extremes from a year ago were 71 and 51 degrees. Today’s hourly readings show 57 at 7 am, 60 at 8 am, 65 at 9 am, 67 at 10 am, 71 at 11 am, 75 at noon, and 79 degrees at 1 pm.
Memphis, Tennessee May 6 Bootleggers take to tree tops on Mississippi river islands near Memphis building whisky stills and houses above floodwaters. Sheriff Knight reports twelve stills seized in recent days with 15 stills, each 1000 gallons mash, and kerosene for fuel found among rafts of tree top operations.
Amarillo city engineer H Banks Jones announced a new 700 000 gallon daily boost once the 30 inch pipeline reaches the system. A 3000 foot pipe unload at Soney and rapid laying by 40 workers sped up the project despite crane breakdown. First water expected by Tuesday night with a second well ready later in the week. The city now consumes about 2 million gallons daily and faces a temporary shortage until full flow resumes.
United Press reports Bolivia imposed martial law following clashes between students and soldiers in La Paz. The May 3 order grew from a student strike tied to national political disruption as Bolivian forces clash with opposition factions and a Chilean-linked labor alignment. One student killed, others injured as authorities seek to restore order.
Lita Gray Chaplin sets $1 250 000 as the price for peace in her divorce from Charlie Chaplin. Secret negotiations had been under way for a week with opposing counsel releasing statements that Chaplin could not meet the terms. The report notes the case aims for settlement out of court. Gov Dan Moody Attorney General Claude Pollard and other Texas officials held a late night conference with Hutchinson county Sheriff Joe Owenby and aides. No conclusions were reached and no action was taken. The Borger investigation continues with unclear resignation status and guarded comment from officials.
Delegates at the U S Chamber of Commerce convention in Washington promised a continued fight against government ownership or operation of major hydro electric projects at Niagara Falls Muscle Shoals Boulder Dam and the St Lawrence river led by W H Oaken editor of the Electrical World who called the developments an economic issue and criticized federal actions
May 6 New Orleans. With northeastern Louisiana submerged, forces attempt to divert floodwaters back to the Mississippi River toward the sea. Rescue fleets mobilize as crevasses widen and dozens of towns are inundated. New Orleans gauge holds at 20.4 feet as crest passes Vicksburg and Natchez.
American stars Bill Tilden and Francis Hunter swept their singles matches at the Red and White club opening. Hunter beat Dr Heinz Landmann 6 2 6 1 9 7 in straight sets while Tilden defeated Otto Froitzheim 6 3 6 2 6 4.
Amarillo lawyer Ernest C Northcutt spoke at the annual Mothers Day program of the American Business club at the Amarillo hotel delivering a sincere eulogy of mothers and pledging continued club service. Rev Caston Foote gave the welcome and Lewis Field oversaw the program as over 100 attendees joined in vocal solos and group performances.
In Vicksburg Mississippi on May 6 United Press reports Louisiana farmers and villagers endure defeats and reversals as they rush to fortify levees. Breathless sweating and swearing crews labor at numerous points to defend small areas yet spared from floodwaters despite advancing pressure from rising waters.
Amarillo schools present a royal coronation for Miss Enid Mayer at 7:30 PM in the municipal auditorium. The event includes a pageant with royal parties, a pantomime of Mendelssohn, various school performances, and prizes for fitness and athletic trophies. Admission is 50 and 35 cents, proceeds go to学校 for next year's equipment.
Long Island City May 6 evidence in the Snyder Gray murder case closed after seven character witnesses for Judd Gray testified he was favorably known to them. Gray detailed his story of the killing of Albert Snyder, sticking closely to his earlier statements. Prosecutors sought to discredit him, while Ruth Snyder’s counsel prepared to reexamine her later. Gray answered calmly, correcting only minor points as the defense pressed questions on motive and finances.
The Rock Island line set a speed record delivering 2 800 feet of pipe for the city’s 18 mile water system. Fort Worth and Denver began unloading at 8 26 am, four minutes later Rock Island loaded a special train, arriving Soncy by 8 50 am. By 9 05 the first truck left for the Word Ranch dam site, with officials boasting thirty nine minutes from receipt to loading.
William Urban, 52, and Henry F. McKeen, 68, were injured in an affray after a Friday water quarrel in San Antonio. Urban is badly stabbed and McKeen has several broken ribs. both are in a hospital.
