Sign Business Becomes Big Business in Amarillo
Amarillo hosts eight bonded sign companies showing the scale of sign making. In 1946 Amarillo issued 129 permits for signs and 50 in the first four months of this year. Neon signs predominate, with over 80 percent of recent permits for neon, while large signs like the Herring Hotel and Santa Fe Building dominate the skyline. The Walter Irvin, Inc. 50 foot sign stands out, and theaters spend heavily on marquee lights. White & Kirk defy trends with a four story wooden sign while downtown stores favor wooden letter signs. Bonded firms include Panhandle Outdoor Advertising and Tri-State Advertising Co.
