Pete Georgan Jones, owner of the Palace Cafe at 415 Polk Street, kept $75 left by a stranger who later returned to retrieve the money. The man claimed kinship to Senator Joe Robinson and said he trusted Pete to guard the funds.
Federal case docket includes Edward L. Schneider, secretary treasurer of Pendergast’s concrete firm, found dead in a car with notes claiming suicide. Pendergast pleads innocence to income tax evasion, arraignments continue for Maddden, Brewster, and Carrolla as part of the Kansas City clean up.
May Day and Child Health Day are marked in Amarillo with Dr. M. L. Fuller noting the city is in fine form. Measles cases exist but scarlet fever is absent and no city homes are under quarantine. The health program relies on pre school clinics and inoculations.
Flight from China to New York encounters a rogue giant panda in the cockpit. Captain Don Terry wrestles the animal while Chief Test Pilot Cassing gains control as the panda bites him. Dr. A. E. Best, from West China Union University, was aboard bound for the Bronx Zoo. The jet lands safely after the panda is subdued. Amarillo Clean-Up Drive Ups the City Trash Heaps Effort under Mayor Rogers. Residents rush to build and haul heaps as part of the paint-up fix-up campaign with a schedule of trash pickups across districts.
Mary Arieta Gilman Beery wins uncontested divorce from Wallace Beery after a brief trial in Carson City Nevada. Custody of their adopted daughter Carol Ann to be shared. Beery's full name listed as Wallace Fitzgerald Beery.
Bertha Guyon pleaded guilty to a drunken driving charge in the 47th district court. She applied for a suspended sentence as attorneys said the case would be concluded in the afternoon.
Construction of Amarillo s new city run golf course started this morning with W A McConnell supervising. He built the Amarillo Country Club course and will serve as manager and pro at the municipal venue. Half of the course should be playable by September, with the clubhouse planned on a knoll northeast of the Preventorium. Mayor Ross D Rogers approved the site after a Saturday inspection.
Wellesley Mass May 1 Harvard wins the senior class hoop race for the first time in 44 years on a downhill 1300 foot course. The winner, revealed as Edward Read of Villanova a Harvard junior and Harvard Lampoon president, had been disguised by a gown. Margaret Cahill and Phyllis Sweetser tied for second. Read was dunked in Lake Waban by contestants.
Windsor Ontario may 1 A man who filled his fountain pen daily for 20 years at the post office restitution today signing as Honest Scot. He sent Postmaster General Norman C McLarty only 10 cents claiming the ink was poor quality and that sum covers the cost of 7300 pens full of ink.
Jocelyn tames the sleek black horse Mephisto as Geoffrey scolds her for riding. Mephisto tears along a line of palm trees, then obeys to avoid mischief, while Jocelyn and Geoffrey clash over control and pride.
Mr Collman predicts scattered showers and thunderstorms with continued warm spring weather. A trace of rain in Amarillo last night brings April total to 2.30 inches, 1. inch above normal, while the year-to-date rainfall hits 5.23 inches, 1.40 inches above normal. Partly cloudy with possible showers tonight and cooler conditions tomorrow.
A British government spokesman said Britain and France will fight if Poland fights. Sir Howard Kennard warned that Britain is prepared to back Poland with all armed forces if Poland resists a threat to its independence after Hitler’s Reichstag speech.
The War Department created a new first line of defense for the Panama Canal by establishing a military department in the Caribbean Sea. The Puerto Rican department will also direct defense of the Gulf of Mexico and the gulf states and prevent hostile powers from placing bases within striking distance of the American continent.
Irving Miller a 19 year old furrier's son in Cleveland Ohio traded a fox fur to a friend in return for a live fox. Miller learns the fur business is full of surprises as he handles the exchange.
In Schenectady New York students from a high school's Astronomy Club completed a home made six inch reflector telescope costing fifty dollars. Work on the instrument began in 1935.
Illinois charged an office error after a misdelivered old age pension check to a University of Missouri freshman. The $20 check meant for John McGee was sent to John McGee Jr and a clerk traced the mistake to John McGee caused by a mail error.
Braniff Airways assigns Don Schomburg as district traffic manager in Amarillo, coming from Wichita to replace Vernon Gunn who will remain with TWA. Gunn notes traffic growth on both Braniff and TWA routes from Amarillo. Schomburg will handle sales and solicitations and Braniff will keep space in the TWA office at the Herring Hotel.
Rome dispatch reports an official communique stating 3,720 Jews affected by the racial laws volunteered to depart Italy before March 12. The date marked the end of a six month period during which they would have been forced to leave the country.
An anonymous confession recounts a staged act two years past at West Texas State College where a crimson banner bearing the hammer and sickle was raised. The narrator, one of five, describes careful planning, destruction of evidence, and a successful but controversial arrest attempt by officers.

National Safety Council reports 17th straight month of lower traffic fatalities. From November 1937 to April 1 there were 41 550 deaths, a saving of 9 230. In March 1 990 died versus 2 260 in 1938, a saving of 270. Amarillo’s Capt Sid Harper attends a Texas traffic safety school to help develop city traffic control.
In Moscow on May Day, war commissar Voroshilov declared the Red Army ready for a large war and not for petty adventures. Thousands of troops, 264 tanks, and hundreds of aircraft staged a show of strength in Red Square as he accused capitalist nations of intrigue and blackmail while asserting the Soviet Union acts for peace.
Building permits issued at city hall for two five room brick homes on Lipscomb Street raise construction costs by 10 650 dollars. One home for W A Dale at 1528 Lipscomb Street and the other for B R Forkner. Yearly construction total reaches 916 135 dollars.
Amarillo public schools prepare for the annual May Day pageant at Butler Field led by Miss Mary Stack Queen of Amarillo High School. R O T C cadets guard the queen as Sam Houston Junior High Band performs and the May Pole Dance with 20 poles closes the evening events.
