Robot weather sentinels speed up upper atmosphere data

Weather bureau tests use radio sondes in aircraft to measure humidity and cloud layers without direct altitude readings. Advances cut ascent time to five miles from flight and aim to halve it for higher data. New ultra violet meters improve cloud level data from stations in Washington Nashville Oklahoma City Omaha and Oakland. Over 1500 radio soundings have aided routine forecasts so far.
