Harvard student Irving M. Clark, 20, of Seattle, says he ate 24 live goldfish in just over five minutes using orange juice as a chaser. He bets he could reach 50, spurred by a $50 wager from Frank Pope of Franklin and Marshall College. Pope reportedly ate only three.

Woodmen of the World Open Convention Opens in San Antonio

Thousands flocked to San Antonio for the 20th biennial Woodmen of the World Texas jurisdiction convention with a parade of about 500 participants. Georgia Governor E. D. Rivers, a sovereign delegate, led the procession and laid a wreath at the Alamo in tribute to Texas revolution heroes.

Amarillo Cited for No Traffic Fatalities

Texas reports an 18 percent drop in traffic deaths for January and February 1999 versus 1958. State safety engineer Haeky Phillips notes 287 fatalities in the first two months of 1998 and 296 in 1999, with Amarillo Beaumont and Wichita Falls among cities over 45,000 population posting zero fatalities.

FDR Seeks Opinion on Wages-Hours by WPA Employed

President Roosevelt asked Attorney General Murphy for a ruling on whether the federal wage hour law covers about half of the 3,009,000 Works Progress Administration workers earning less than 25 cents per hour. The issue, raised during January debates on the relief bill, affects unskilled WPA workers, mainly in the South.

Fire damages large house at 808 Van Buren Street

Fire caused by an electric toaster left on this morning damaged a large frame house at 808 Van Buren Street. Firemen received the alarm at 7:30 PM and found a large hole in a room wall and a hole burned in the floor. Miss Ollie McCoombs occupies the home.

Light Showers Forecast Near Canadian River

Weather notes predict light showers today and tonight near the Canadian River with a south breeze. Mr. Collman expects a low around 45 degrees and cannot rule out changes for tomorrow night. Most showers likely north of the river with variable temperatures.

Markets show hogs at 7.20 top with 2300 head traded and sows 6.00 to 6.25. Cattle 11,000 with calves 1300. mediums and good steers 8.75 to 10.50, small lots heifers and yearlings down from .75. cows 5.75 to 9.77, selected dealers 10.00 to 10.50. Sheep 5700 with fed lambs 9.00 to 9.25 and above 9.50, no spring lambs early.

Coronado Jones Music Featured By Kiwanis Club

The Amarillo Kiwanis Club hosted a noon program at the Amarillo Hotel featuring Coronado Jones music under Homer Rice. Four numbers from the show were performed by the cast including Sittin Round the Chuck Wagon Night on the Prairie Manhattan Nights and We're off to New York with Paul Ellis and the cowboy quartet. Wes Izzard spoke on the musical's production and the April 3 4 Municipal Auditorium performances were announced with music by Murray Meeker and Mildred Meeker Miller.

Texas Senate Begins Pension Plan Debate

In Austin on March 27 the Texas Senate opened discussion on Senate Joint Resolution No. 12 a broad social security and tax package aimed at reforming old age assistance. Senator Rudolph Weinert urged a calm approach and asked for light not heat while urging consideration without personalities. The House moved to break a pension tax deadlock by creating a 10 member panel to evaluate the sales tax amendment and address the $17 million general fund deficit with a recommendation for action.
