Allied forces push along the Rhine after four armies breach German defenses. Montgomery says the battle is going well while reports claim Frankfurt and its approaches are under heavy pressure and enemy lines crumble under the Allied advance.
Associate Justice Clayton Heare announced his resignation effective April 1 to Gov. Coke Stevenson, who named Tom Garland to succeed him. Heare plans to return to private practice in Amarillo after serving since October 1943. He within Shamrock and his family reside at 1531 Lipscomb.
Berlin said a fourth Soviet spring offensive struck toward Austria’s southern mountains as divisions moved from Italy and the Western front to defend Vienna. Russian armies neared the Austrian border and overran much of Hungary while Konev’s forces pressed in Moravian mountains north of Vienna. Rokossovsky’s drive into Danzig met German evacuation actions as Warsaw reported heavy fighting near the Baltic port.
London reports 300 escorted American bombers attacked southeastern Germany targeting a synthetic oil plant and a natural refinery at Zeitz and the twin oil factories at Plauen. The raids formed a heavy assault timed with the U S Fifteenth Air Force in Italy and followed a weeklong prelude for the Rhine offensive.
March 26 U S First Army and Seventh Army troops pierced German lines advancing 22 miles, with reports of heavy Allied ground and air pressure across the Wesel region. Patton’s columns moved through villages toward the path of Berlin bound lines as German defenses collapsed. Thousands of prisoners and scattered resistance marked a dramatic push toward the north.

The Senate on March 26 defeated by 18 to 11 a proposed constitutional amendment to abolish the office of constable. Proponents argued the office is unnecessary while opponents warned communities could lose police protection if abolished.
In Moscow on March 26 Pravda hailed the Red Army as saviors of world civilization and culture in the liberated European countries. It stated Russia respects the independence of other nations and is ready to live in friendship with its neighbors.
Judge Henry Bishop in Canyon held district court with Amarillo residents of Randall County summoned by telephone for jury service at 2:30 this afternoon. Prospective jurors had ignored mail summons, with a deputy noting the judge is not in a good humor about the situation.
U S artillery of the 66th Division sank a 7 000 ton German freighter after it sailed into Lorient. It was the third enemy ship sunk by shellfire there in three days as 5 000 Germans were besieged in the Atlantic port since last summer.
Swiss and British dispatches report Hitler convened an emergency gathering of ministers and gauleiters at Berchtesgaden with plans kept secret. A Nazi youth leader urged youths to join the fight while reports say Berlin is tense and ready for further air landings behind German lines. The Figaro notes 10 000 SS troops prepared to form an underground guerrilla force under Himmler.
Officials from the War Production Board and other agencies meet at the Herring Hotel to discuss boosting carbon black production. The shortage is described as acute, with current output for only three months, impacting synthetic rubber programs. Phillips Petroleum Company, supplying much residue gas, is represented by president K. Adams in advisory capacity.
Weather Bureau warns of strong afternoon winds up to 30 mph with gusts and light dust. Temperatures rise to around 74 after a cold night with 41 above tonight. Dalhart and Adrian report freezes. The forecast calls for fair and warmer conditions in Amarillo and vicinity with partly cloudy skies and light to breezy winds. West Texas regions expect warmer tonight with increasing cloudiness this afternoon and Tuesday, while New Mexico shows partly cloudy skies and a chance of snow flurries in northern mountains late Tuesday night. Highs near 60 in the west and up to 80 in the southeast, with lows around 30s to mid 40s. The 24 hour readings show 63 and 67 degrees, with a noon low around 34.
