London reports continuous Allied air bombing of Germany at about 274 tons per hour, targeting the Ruhr and Rhine regions to isolate the Reich and pave the way for a ground assault. Since the month’s start, roughly 97,000 flights have been flown with about 21,550 by U.S. heavy bombers, signaling unprecedented scale.
Allied forces report crossing the Rhine barrier south of Ludwigshafen and near Mainz after heavy German resistance. American troops advance from Remagen and seize Neuweid, Siegburg, and about 3,000 Mainz prisoners as Mainz falls after over 48 hours of combat. Casualties and captures push total to over 100,000.
Allied heavy bombers and fighters pound Germany’s Rhine defenses for the third day. Reports say a German commander being shifted to the West may signal a last stand. American forces push toward the Sieg River, clearing a nine mile stretch on the Rhine’s southern bank.

John Thad Scott Jr, of Houston, began his duties today as the eighth regional War Labor Board attorney after being appointed by Wales H Madden of Amarillo the regional board chairman. He succeeds A Langley Coffey who became vice chairman January 19. Scott had served as acting regional attorney since Coffey's appointment.
A government official stated that U S authorities aided Chinese forces in North China and rescued numerous American personnel including Superfortress crews in occupied territories. The report cites sources such as John Mannerd Lor and real estate and loan listings.
A James Marlow report notes a surge in crime at home parallel to wartime fighting. FBI tally shows daily felonies including 4 killings, 30 rapes, 150 aggravated assaults, 555 auto thefts, 749 burglaries, and 2,176 larcenies.
Positive action to build a city coliseum in Amarillo. W J Beechler of the Tri State Fair Association named nine local businessmen and cattlemen to a steering committee for the exposition grounds and buildings. Members include Harvey Allen E A Simpson S B Whittenberg Miles Bivins Virgil Patterson Bill Gunn Ross Rogers Wes Izzard and Herbert H Litle. A vote on a $1 000 000 bond was proposed to finance the project.
General Omar Bradley said there is nothing to stop Allied forces from crossing the Rhine soon and that the Ruhr could be crossed with less opposition. He cautioned against declaring the war over, noted rapid advances by the Third and Seventh armies, and discussed Kesselring's transfer to the Western Front.
Japan expands operations in China with a three fold aim to harvest southern Henan and northern Hubei wheat, disrupt US air bases, and fortify the Shanghai Hankow corridor. In the Philippines MacArthur reports sinking small freighters, blockade pressure increases on Manila, and US forces tighten around Baguio as 33rd Division nears Naguilian and the airfield.
Reports from London say Soviet Russia urged Britain to have Poland represented at the April 25 World Security Conference in San Francisco. The British Foreign Office did not comment publicly.

President Roosevelt cancels Friday morning news conference to discuss the food situation. No reason given. He hosts the Earl of Athlone and Princess Alice alongside Presidential Assistant Daniels says he will speak informally. Senate agriculture subcommittee plans hearings to probe the black market.
Governor Coke R. Stevenson signed nine bills in the Texas session. The Moffett Act grants soldiers free automobile driving rights until after discharge. The measures also include issuing firemen's certificates of service and extending wages and hour rules for policemen and firemen to cities with 25 000 or more. A 15 day annual vacation is required in cities over 30 000.
Allied air forces blasted the Ruhr for a third day as 1,250 American heavy bombers and 350 fighters, plus British Lancasters, attacked rail yards and a key Bremen rail bridge. A U S Strategic Air Forces communique said nine German Army camps were wrecked by 3,250 tons of bombs and jet airfields were rendered unserviceable.
Area director S. G. Springfield of the War Manpower Commission cites returning officers facing big pay cuts after military service. A recent example shows a young man leaving school earns 35 dollars weekly on a newspaper staff, then 7,200 dollars yearly as an air force lieutenant colonel, and finally returns to his old job at 45 dollars weekly.
British Prime Minister Churchill said the moment of a final push in Europe has arrived as Allied air attacks intensify across Germany. Weather favors operations with the Rhine crossing expected soon, while Montgomery and Allied forces position for a major assault near the Oder valley and toward Berlin.
