British and American officials meet informally near the UN Security Council to rethink strategy on the Soviet Iranian dispute as Radio Moscow reports an agreement for Russian withdrawal. Byrnes urges UNO unity while Truman pledges full cooperation as the council opens in Hunter College.
A. F. Whitney, president of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, testifies before a fact finding board in Chicago on March 25. He accuses the railroads of inefficiency, urges adoption of 45 proposed rules by two unions, and warns current practices risk public safety and costly waste. He calls a 70 car freight and 14 car passenger train limit vital for safety and efficiency.
Soviet agents in Canada were ordered to obtain information on American troop movements to Europe and Asia. The cable, disclosed at the Fred Rose and Raymond Boyer case, asked for locations of Ninth US Army HQ units, First Air Distant Army plans, and atomic bomb research records. Isor Gouzenko testified the espionage ring operated for two years and aimed to document atomic processes.
Washington columnist Frederick C. Othman portrays a Jackson Day banquet for Democrats as a dining debacle. He mocks the spread as skimpy and poorly served, noting lavish tableware for officials while attendees endure scant portions, minor bread and salad, and long restaurant lines as hunger spreads among attendees.
President Truman urged unity for congressional Democrats at a Jackson Day event in Washington. The atom bomb task force says both tests can be completed this summer despite a delayed schedule. The first test would occur after July 1 and the second about six weeks later, weather permitting at Bikini.
