John Walker Twyman, charged with murder in the phantom death of Walter Fowler at a hardware yard on Tyler in Amarillo, remains missing. Officers report a national stop order, with Twyman traced from Los Angeles to Amarillo until Monday afternoon when he locked his hotel room and vanished. He has a prior criminal record and a description is on file.

A downtown Pittsburgh blaze tore through a three block area early today destroying a dozen food and supply buildings. Estimated damage runs 500000 to 700000 with fourteen firefighters injured by falling debris as freight cars and contents burn. Firemen call it the worst city fire in 30 years.

A two day conference of Veterans Administration officials and county reps along with U S Employment Service staff from 44 counties closes with a banquet at the Herring Hotel Crystal Ballroom. Speakers include Polk T Lunquest and Col Thomas G Lanphier who will discuss VA service to area veterans.
Dr. Norris E. Bradbury announces permission to declassify fundamental instrumentation and physical and chemical phenomena from Los Alamos labs. Declassification granted by Maj. Gen. Leslie R. Groves from higher authority, with certain restrictions.
A St. Louis banker testified that Commodore James K. Vardaman Jr was unqualified for the Federal Reserve Board by experience record and temperament. James P. Hickok called him prejudiced with violent likes and dislikes affecting judgment during the Senate hearing on Truman aide's nomination. Two other bankers echoed similar concerns.

Edward Martin ordered Pennsylvania state police into Pittsburgh to guard supervisors crossing CIO picket lines at the Westinghouse plant amid a mass meeting called by 75,000 CIO electrical workers on strike nationwide. The wage proposal cited ranges from 9.7 to 18.5 cents per hour with 700 supervisors instructed to report.
London reports Transjordan becomes a sovereign state as the British mandate ends. British Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin and Ibrahim Pasha Hashim sign a treaty terminating the mandate from the postwar era.

He said Russian authorities directed a Soviet espionage ring in Canada and planned for a future event that could threaten war. The hearing was closed to the public amid life threats against Gouzenko.
The War Department plans to use Amarillo Air Field as a basic training center with deactivation scheduled for August 31. Buckley Army Air Field in Denver will be reactivated as a basic training center. Sheppard Keesler and San Antonio fields will also operate under the Technical Training Command in St. Louis. three fields will train troops April 1 through August 31.
