In Birmingham and surrounding areas a tornado killed over 300 people and caused extensive property damage. The Red Cross and American Legion led relief efforts with doctors nurses and local residents aiding survivors. Dr Williams De Kleine is named among responders.
The Texas Supreme Court refused Mrs. Ida Darden of Fort Worth permission to mandamus the Democratic State Executive Committee to field her for congress-at-large without designated places. The committee had required running for specific places and the ruling leaves that policy in effect.
Roy Owings a 40 year old car washer died after a highway shooting last night near Borger. Joseph Mellin Sr 38 sought in connection with the fatal shooting. Howard Bryant of Amarillo who was with Owings escaped unharmed. Bryant said a repossession dispute led to the exchange and the gunfire. Owings leaves four children and a widow. Mellin and Bryant are connected to the case.
A 1921 train voyage from New York to Miami visits West Palm Beach and Jacksonville leaders discuss Florida’s potential canal linking the Atlantic and Gulf. Senator Long and J. S. Daniels urge construction, claiming it would boost American coastwise shipping and pay for itself early. The journey showcases Florida’s landscape, including Lake Okeechobee and orange groves.
Ralph Shelton of Schenectady testified in Hopewell that he overheard men discussing the Lindbergh kidnaping aboard an Albany night boat on March 10. He said the speakers were New York racketeers with a gang operating from a New York speakeasy in the Fifties and that he knew the speakeasy address.

Sessions at Polk Street Methodist Church plus youth banquet at Central Presbyterian Church and a men's luncheon at the Herring Hotel. Dr. Mobley hails the group as the most distinguished ever assembled.
Irving Bitz tells the Brooklyn Eagle that Salvy Spitale's Detroit trip on a hot tip proved worthless and that no so called organized gang did the Lindbergh baby kidnapping, asserting only uncertainty remains.
Georgia Democrats cast presidential preference in a unique early primary between Gov. Franklin D. Roosevelt of New York and Judge G. M. Howard of Atlanta. Howard backs Garner, while Roosevelt, a Georgia-adopted son, is projected to win in state counties. Garner in no personal endorsement from the judge.
Des Moines Iowa March 23 The state delegation of 25 will support President Hoover at the Republican National Convention and reelect him. The Iowa convention praised Hoover's administration and pledged loyalty to Iowa Republicanism. Only one motion faced opposition, a roll call showed 1 268 and one ninth to 103 and eight ninths. The resolutions favored cutting government costs while keeping the public burden in mind. No report was issued on prohibition.
The Texas Railroad Commission sustained McLean Gray County ordinance cutting natural gas rates from 50 to 30 cents per 1000 cubic feet. McLean Gas Company argued the rates were unfair, but evidence at the hearing failed to prove unreasonableness.
Texas Court of Criminal Appeals reverses a Jefferson County conviction for riding in the white section of an East Texas Electric Railway bus in Beaumont. The ruling says Jim Crow statutes for trains street cars and interurban cars do not cover motor buses despite segregated, clearly marked compartments.
The Court of Criminal Appeals affirmed the conviction of W. Scrivnor for robbing Chester Griffin, a First National Bank of Texas City employee, of 5000. Scrivnor was sentenced to ten years. The court rejected a reversal bid based on alleged jury misconduct and found no other trial errors. The robbery occurred November 1, 1927.
Minneapolis considers a 200‑family self‑sustaining colony on 20 000 acres under a farm cooperative model. Oscar W Behrens says a $100 000 start fund secures land on 25 year contracts with each family buying plots. The project includes schools manufacturing plants and surplus trade to obtain needed goods. Northern county boards invited to cooperate on land purchase.
Authorities planned to file murder charges against a Dallas man accused of killing German couple George Brimberry about 58 and his wife 50 at their cabin near Arp Monday night. The suspect was arrested near the scene and admitted wearing blood stained trousers. Officers linked the man by tracks from the cabin.
Washington March 23 President Hoover was informed the American Legion Re-Employment Drive in its fifth week had returned 312,897 jobless men to work. Executive director Mark T. McKee of Detroit said the figure, reported yesterday, covered 13,393 placements in 1,791 towns and cities.
War crowds gather in Shanghai as Japanese officials warn against Chinese re entry into the evacuation zone near Soochow Creek. In Washington, Rep Connery urges a 700 million dollar federal relief loan plan for states, amid debate on emergency road funds and banking reform proposals.
Chicago announces a $4,133,000 cash payday for 14,000 teachers and city employees. Banks have purchased tax anticipation warrants to fund payments for the last half of November, with teachers due for 14,000 staff and other city workers receiving about $1,833,000 of the total while the city still owes $23,000,000 in overdue salaries.

London reports that Britain will not tolerate repeal of the oath of allegiance or cessation of Irish land annuities. J. H. Thomas told Commons the government sent a communication to the Free State to make its stance clear. Eamon De Valera indicated plans to abolish the oath and stop annuity payments, per public statements surrounding the Irish election.
Attorney General James V. Allred of Austin will speak at the Rotary Club luncheon in the Amarillo Hotel tomorrow at noon en route to visit his brother Raymond Allred district attorney of the 31st judicial district in Pampa. His topic is not announced. Griggs ambulance. Phone 4311.
A 17 year old boy in Tulsa captured two men after they burglarized the Tom Bandy general merchandise store. Harris, 22, of Hot Springs Arkansas, and Behell, 18, of Corpus Christi Texas, were wounded. Harris suffered shotgun wounds to left hand and arm. The boy fired after orders to halt were ignored. Schell, the partner, fled but was captured on return. The youth alerted his uncle Tom Bandy, a physician, and the night watchman. The Bandy store had been burglarized three times since last September.
In Cleburne Texas on March 23 W Terrel of the Texas Railroad Commission heard the Burlington and Rock Island Railroad Company request to abandon its life between Hillsboro and Cleburne. Assistant state attorney general T C Christopher opposed the abandonment while the hearing was conducted before interstate commerce commission examiner H C Davis.
F L Hill, 54, a Pampa oil man, was found dead in a Waco hotel room. He had been dead several hours and a bottle with a small amount of poison was found in the room. The coroner ruled death self administered. Funeral services were planned here Friday.
Police in Amarillo requested public assistance in locating Melin described as 38 years old, five feet eight inches, 150 pounds with a ruddy complexion and a Dutchy manner of speech. The search prompt went out Wednesday to aid Amarillo authorities.
The Court of Criminal Appeals affirmed convictions of Oren Jackson and Ones Jackson of Vega on equivocal law violations. They were convicted and sentenced to one year each in the Oldham County district court at Vega during the September 1930 term.
