Three DSCs For Crew Of Riddled Fortress Ship

LONDON March 22 Four crew members of the Fortress Squawkin Hawk Second received Distinguished Service Crosses for heroism in September last year. Capt Sumner H Reeder pilot Lt Russell W Engel navigator and Flight Officer Harry E Eddeburn co pilot were honored posthumously or for self sacrifice under heavy Nazi fire as the bomber limped home across enemy lines. Engineer Gunner Harold L Pope devised an emergency oxygen line to aid wounded and helped stabilize the crew during evasive maneuvers until an emergency English field was reached. Police report credits Pope with saving the ship and his comrades.
