Sheriff Slayer Tarwater Nabbed in Mountain Trail Case

A search party tracked a man yesterday to the mountains and returned to obtain an automobile specially equipped for travel on rough terrain. The capture involved Sheriff Tarwater and Calvin Darst of the Border Patrol during the manhunt.

Slay Sheriff Morrow Captured After Mountain Manhunt

Jose Villalobos, 24, a Mexican national, was captured 70 miles southwest of Presidio after a rugged pursuit across mountains. He admitted shooting Sheriff O W Blackie Morrow with the sheriff's gun during a struggle. The arrest followed a cross border hunt with a final stop near Ojinaga, Mexico, where Villalobos was turned over. A second man, a US citizen with Mexican descent, remains at large. Under international law, trial would occur in a Mexican court.

Acheson urges seven point plan to ease East West tensions

Secretary Acheson challenged Russia to accept a seven point program to end aggressive diplomacy and push for peace treaties and atomic controls. He warned Moscow would likely refuse but urged identification and eventual reconciliation of the two systems. Also reports the death of Col. Gen. Porphyry Chanchibadze at 49 after a long illness in Moscow.

Stock Market Continues Climb In 1949-50 Bull Rally

New York trading surged as demand for stocks lifted the market to higher levels. Leading issues gained a few cents to about $1 a share, some at their peak in years. Heavy buying pushed the Dow and other averages up, marking one of the steepest climbs in years and placing averages near highs last seen in 1946.

Washington March 16 AP The House Appropriations Committee tentatively trimmed President Truman’s requested 12 month spending to about 29.1 billion dollars from 30.3 billion. The panel has not formally voted but a central committee recommended action on an omnibus bill excluding Marshall Plan aid and permanent trust funds.

Man Burns to Death in Bed at Fort Sumner

A Clovis man, George Trickler, an REA employee, was burned to death in his Fort Sumner bed at the Redondo Courts. The fire confined to the bedroom, with roommates unaware of the blaze until returning from a Clovis trip. No other details are available.

Farm laborer dies in truck crash near Lamesa

Thomas Ortiz Mendoza aged 52 from San Marcos was fatally injured Tuesday night after falling or being thrown from the cab of his truck 14 miles southwest of Lamesa. He worked as a farm laborer. The accident occurred near the area surrounding the town.

Hush-Hush Projects Request 70 Million On Capitol Hill

Washington March 16 AP Requests for about 70 million dollars for highly secret military installations described as imperatively needed were studied on Capitol Hill today. Military witnesses urged the House Armed Services Committee to grant high priority. The request is part of a 187,142,000 amendment to the Defense Department's 477,974,000 public works bill. Chairman Vinson ordered two Marine amendments totaling 27,476,000, boosting public works requests to 692,592,000. The Marine items include 2,476,060 for Quantico living quarters and 25 million for a depot in the East likely at Albany, Georgia.

170000 Housing Project in South Amarillo

The city engineer issued building permits totaling 170000 for a 34 home project in the 3800 and 4000 blocks of Gable Street. The two bedroom modernistic houses, with oak flooring and composition roofs, are to be built by Barfield Lumber Company with plans by Southwest Houses of Fort Worth. Construction on the first unit was set to start this afternoon.

Stray B 50 Bombs Rip Utah Air Base

Two B 50 bombers from Castle Air Force Base Merced California conducted simulated bombing over an Utah Ogden area base. After 15 simulations a misfire caused the bomb bay doors to release 10 practice bombs weighing 100 pounds each, seven of which exploded in open areas around the base maintenance headquarters.
