October reveals unusually calm plains weather with no wind at all. The slice of life notes A V McQuiddy’s fashion, Panhandle catfish fishing, and letters about war plans impacting Amarillo economies. Walter Blackburn’s son reports Burma action, while civic music growth and local trivia pepper the issue.
Information on the whereabouts of Charles W. Harlan, last heard from about 50 years ago, was requested by his nephew Charles T. Hamilton of 15 Stuart Street, Decatur. Rennie Harlan, a brother, remains in Pairfield. Robert C. Jones will speak at 7:45 pm at San Marcos Church of Christ on Christian Relation To Civil Government announced by minister C. V. Oldham.
A reader signs as a married man with a large family asking for help with employment. The letter notes hardship and a desire for work and support.
Hand carved leather pictures by Dr. William Allen Maddox from Lubbock are shown in the Amarillo Hotel lobby as part of the Fat Stock Show week. The three by six foot works depict The Christ and Will Rogers, with a Lord's Prayer inscribed, and are valued for labor at over 50 000 dollars.
Dozens of Amarillo residents joined to push the Victory Bond drive over the top next week. A $250000 deficit in the county quota will be filled as speakers visit theaters churches schools and clubs. Bill Gilstrap chairs the effort with John Boyce as vice chair.
Mayor Joe Jenkins praised the sale of tickets for the St Patrick dance at the Nat to benefit police and the Elks Shrine. He noted the need to raise funds to buy uniforms for the police department as living costs rise and officers work for low wages.
After a postwar downturn, Amarillo shows rising housing activity as four permits are issued including a remodel at 909 Travis Street costing 2500 dollars. Fred Seale receives two home permits on Ridgemere and B I Stephens gets a frame house permit for 67 Osage Street.
