End of European War Brings Uncertain Troop Drawdown Plans
Washington reports that despite joy over crossing the Rhine American leaders fear war weariness and project limited immediate discharges. Furloughs will occur for troops returning from Europe to the Pacific, with many to be transferred directly to Asia after short home time. Russia or China changes aside, the price of victory includes continued fighting and sustaining war production at current or near levels. 5,000,000 Japanese in China is the best estimate, but reliance on Chinese manpower may fade as American arms and training dominate future operations.
