Captain Hawthorne C Gray, airmobile balloonist, barely avoided disaster during a record ascent today. He used numb fingers to sever ballast to slow a fast descent from about 17000 feet, regaining consciousness after a 1200 feet per minute plunge. Cold, oxygen deprivation and dull knives hampered his effort, but he managed to slow the craft to 600 feet per minute before narrowly missing wires near Ashley Illinois and suffering only a sprained ankle.
