March 8 in Austin the House debated a compromise to let only the state sell hard liquor while allowing private beer and wine sales as part of a push to repeal prohibition. The session ended with the issue unresolved and adjournment until Monday.
The case centers on District Judge FE C Nelson ruling on a motion by Hamlin defense attorney Dusty Miller regarding a purported confession. Prosecutors Grady Hazlewood and FE Simpson defied the order, were seized by Sheriff Bill Adams at noon, and faced possible habeas corpus action. Hamlin's murder trial is set for Monday, with the confession allegedly taken January 8 and 9.
Gen. Hugh S. Johnson heard Sen. Huey P. Long laughable remarks during Long's Providence speech while he refrained from commenting until after Rev. Charles E. Coughlin's Monday address. Johnson spoke to the Rhode Island Bar Association on constitutional NRA issues, praising religion but opposing political use of religion. He noted court rulings limiting the recovery act and argued commerce knows no borders in intra and inter state trade.
Sir Malcolm Campbell raised his land speed record at Daytona Beach by driving Bluebird from 272.108 to 276.816 mph. He posted a 13.20 second measured mile at 272.727 mph and returned in 12.81 seconds at 281.030 mph, signaling another decision about when he may race again.
Washington reports Huey P. Long boasted he kept 50 million people awake with a three quarter hour radio speech attacking President Roosevelt and Gen. Hugh Johnson. He urged adoption of his share-our-wealth program and promised to make every man a king.
Borger observed the Panhandle ninth anniversary with a day full of events and a morning parade. The celebration, supervised by the Borger Legion Post and the chamber of commerce, drew hundreds and featured 70 floats, plus bands from the chamber of commerce and high school, along with Amarillo Legion drum corps.

The House Labor Committee approved the Lundeen unemployment and old age insurance bill 7 to 6 after a tied motion to postpone. The bill would have the federal government pay benefits not less than 10 dollars weekly plus 3 per dependent. Meanwhile the Senate moved to approve 400 million dollars for the war department to expand fighting forces, despite warnings of potential Pacific conflict.

Mrs. B F Ozee a dairy operator and her employee Charles Jameson 26 were killed when their truck was struck by Santa Fe mixed train No 53 near the Amarillo Cotton Seed Oil Mill at Grand Avenue. Mrs Ozee died later at St Anthony's Hospital after suffering multiple injuries.
OLTON Texas March 5 193? Salesman Bill Cooke brother of defendant Vera Cooke testified about rental arrangements at the farm where Tom Cooke died of poison. He described business ties and rent proceeds while noting Tom owed him about 1800 dollars. He said he urged both spouses to keep records and work. The state’s rebuttal neared as testimony wrapped up.
N C Outlaw West Texas attorney faces trial on charges of conspiring to obstruct justice in the grand jury probe of a machine gun killing of a Federal narcotics agent. He pleads not guilty after a motion to quash the indictment is overruled. More than 50 witnesses sworn.
Amarillo residents hear a cautious forecast of probably light rain tonight and Saturday with a warmer low around 40. Weatherman H. T. Collman notes moisture from California to the Panhandle and clouds moving eastward, but locals remain wary of forecasts.
