Ambassador Houghton protested to Foreign Minister Stresemann over Deputy Keortheus insulting three American women on a Cologne Berlin train. Stresemann promised immediate investigation. The women named Mrs Coffin Miss Goldsmith and Mrs Conger said the deputy cursed them after they refused to move their bags.
Washington March 7 The American Legion four fold bonus bill was rejected by the house ways and means committee. It said to report a twofold plan for veterans compensation including paid up insurance and the paid bonus with the cash amount yet to be set. The plan also included home and farm aid provisions.
State Rangers operating in San Antonio during the six months ending March 1 filed 192 complaints charging violation of the national dry act. They captured 407 stills destroyed 15 400 gallons of mash and 2 140 gallons of liquor and arrested 245 persons on gaming charges.
Fire swept the court house square in Waxahachie Texas causing damages estimated at seventy five thousand dollars. The Hamilton drug store building was destroyed and eight doctors lost their entire equipment.
Mayence March 7. Three workers were killed and 38 wounded in fighting with police at the Dadisch Analin works in Ludwigshaven today. Five police were wounded. Serious trouble is feared. One worker was killed yesterday and twenty wounded when the factory doors closed locking out 20,000 workers.
Canyon officials expect the remaining half mile of Fifth avenue to begin paving within 20 days after property owners signed on. Canyon now has three miles of paved streets with mayor Co. N. Harrison confirming the plan.
Canada reports a remarkable 25 year increase in grain and flour exports. Wheat exports grew from 3,359,640 bushels in 1900-01 to 229,681,814 bushels in the crop year ending August 1923, per the bureau of statistics.
Washington March 7 the senate investigating committee ordered the telegraph company to provide copies of all messages sent to or by Mrs Albert B Fall and Mrs J W Zevely between December 1 and March 6. Mrs Fall is the wife of former interior secretary Albert B Fall and a central figure in the oil inquiry. Mrs Zevely is the wife of Harry F Sinclair's Washington attorney and Fall stayed at her apartment when he fell ill after returning from Florida.
Washington reporters say Representatives Gillman of Maryland and Langley of Kentucky, both Republicans, deny they are the two congressmen named in Chicago grand jury disclosures. They demand charges and say they will answer in detail, amid capital gossip tying two lawmakers to a bribery investigation linked to Charles Forbes and John Thompson.
Rome reports that the Vatican may elevate three American archbishops to cardinal within years. Archbishop Patrick J. Hayes of New York would likely receive the red hat first at the next consistory. Followed by Archbishop George Mundelein of Chicago and Archbishop E J Hanny of San Francisco.
In Houston on March 7 eight metal doors at the First National bank building sparked a walkout of about 300 carpenters who claimed the hanging of the doors was their work. The sheet metal workers argued the task fell to them and the labor council ruled for the metal workers, prompting carpenters to quit. The stoppage halted work on several buildings and daily wage losses were pegged at about 2500 dollars.
Lubbock plans to enlarge the Lubbock Inn with a four story building adding 120 rooms. Nearly $100,000 has been subscribed under a financing plan that allows a stock issue of not less than $1,000 to each purchaser.
