A Mid-Continent DC-3 crashed in a snow squall near Sioux City during approach to land, killing 14 including the pilot Captain James Graham and co pilot Philip K. Toler. At least nine survived. survivors listed include Roy Engel and Walter Lutz among others.
US Marines swept abandoned Hoengsong as they pushed toward the central Korean front amid stiff Communist resistance. Red jets challenged US aircraft near Manchurian border while Marines stormed hills to retake the lifeline hub, finding wrecked vehicles and frozen casualties along the rubble strewn highway. Hoengsong, 50 miles east of Seoul, fell to Chinese forces on Feb. 12 during a Red counter offensive.
Amarillo saw a light morning shower with a trace of moisture at the city terminal. The Globe News gauge recorded .01 inch. Weatherman H. C. Winburn said SW winds likely prevented additional moisture soon. Noon winds near 30 mph, with 30 to 40 mph winds expected through the afternoon.
In Somerville on March 2 a twelve-year-old boy named Robert Ep recht Jr told police he was assaulted and robbed. Officers found he had been beaten by three boys and robbed of 70 cents a bag of apples and school bus tickets.
Three men including a corporal connected to Sheppard Air Force Base payroll theft were charged after authorities recovered all $33,000 from McNeely’s car. Graden Miller admitted being the gunman and named Corporal Hersch, while Hersch and McNeely faced charges in Wichita Falls and Oklahoma.
Washington March 2 Senate RFC investigators heard that Washington attorney Joseph H. Rosenbaum boasted he had RFC Directors Dunham and Willett in his hip pocket. Roy Fruehaus, a trailer maker, said Rosenbaum claimed he could save Lustron Corp which had $37.5 million in RFC loans and later went bankrupt. Rosenbaum denied the brag and any special influence with the RFC while noting fees of $100,000 sought for his role in the reorganization.
Federal grand jury to hear evidence March 19 against Boston postal clerks suspected of defrauding the government of hundreds of thousands through payroll padding. Inspectors raided the Big South postal annex finding 28 absent workers whose time cards were punched, with schemes paying colleagues for punching duties and off time.
Lucile Vogeler, wife of ITT manager Robert Vogeler, recounts her plan to free her husband, imprisoned as a spy by Hungary’s Reds, and claims the State Department ignored her efforts. Robert Vogeler received a 15 year sentence in 1949 by the same communist judge who tried Cardinal Mindszenty.

Dwaine Walker of Hereford earned 2.50 a pound for his grand champion calf sold to Plains Chevrolet Company for re sale to aid the Red Cross and Junior League. The reserve calf bought by Mrs. Mary E. Bivins brought 1.30 a pound, same as 1950, with proceeds to the Preventorium.
Amarillo and vicinity expect windier and warmer conditions this afternoon, followed by clearing skies and a drop in temperature tonight and Saturday. Highs around 72 today and 54 tomorrow, with a 55 degree high the past 24 hours and a trace of precipitation noted. West Texas remains partly cloudy with cooler nights, while New Mexico sees cloudy skies and light snow flurries in the northwest.
Chief Sid Harper announces the first of eight hires for school patrols, including four women Crystal Martin Ethel Clark Alice Crabb and Sylvia E Clark. The eight will free traffic officers, boost efficiency by 75 percent, wear uniforms, work five days weekly during school hours, and be paid monthly with uniform allowances. Men will patrol parks in vacation months and none will be armed.
Washington bulletin reports the Senate agreed to a test vote Monday on lowering the draft age to 18 years and six months, current law requires induction at 19. President Truman departed for a three-week vacation in Key West, Florida.
The Harold G. Taylor family from Arkansas, missing for days in a two state search, were found safe in New Boston Texas and headed home. Parents C F Taylor and Galen Nethercutt hosted them briefly as police confirmed the sighting and that the family would travel home. Travis seven Charlotte Gene three and Donna Lee 18 months were aboard during the update.
State police, Texas Rangers, and Texarkana officers investigate a missing Harold Taylor after he wired for $25 to fix a car brake near Texarkana. Taylor's wife and parents believed he would return, with lines of inquiry tracing to Pine Bluff and a garage in Texarkana. The Navy veteran and carpenter worked with his father, remaining unaccounted since February 21.
London March 2 Soviet Tass reported that scientists produced five harvests of wheat in a single year by growing crops under artificial light. The claim highlights advances in controlled-environment agriculture and unverified such reports.
