The Senate narrowly passed a beef price controls bill 71 to 10 after a 16 hour session. It allows rent increases, bans meat price rollbacks, and may permit rollbacks on some manufactured items. House backing 31 day extension to July 31 is likely.
GEN Ridgway says he is willing to entertain any armistice request from the enemy as fighting rages along Korea front. North Korea radio demands UN halt aggression and that U S and South Korea leaders be tried as war criminals. City talks on oil lease near Placid Lake as deep well planned within 30 days. Lease offers set at 1 dollar per acre with annual rent and one eighth royalty. Washington says Truman instructed cease fire talks and Ridgway may be dispatched to Korea on short notice.
An Amarillo man arrested in Groom was questioned by Rangers about the Pleasant Valley rape case. Officers described the suspect as 38 with reddish blond hair and wrinkles, about 5 feet 9 inches, wearing sports clothes. The man fled from Groom jail, was recaptured, and later jailed in McLean. The taxi driver who ferried him faces possible charges. Police continue reviewing tips as the manhunt expands. The case involves a four time assault on a Pleasant Valley girl near her home. A Oklahoma man cleared by lie detector in Austin was released.
United States and United Nations officials indicated an armistice plan for Korea. Instructions reportedly sent to Gen Ridgway authorize cease fire negotiations with North Korean and Chinese commanders, pending Washington approval. Sen Connally welcomed the green light, while front lines showed renewed fighting on a hard line sector. Ambassador Sebald made an unannounced visit to Pusan in connection with the cease fire situation.
Secretary of State George C. Marshall testified before a House committee that U S allies would require continued aid into 1954. He outlined an eight and a half billion dollar program, with six point three billion for foreign military aid, mainly to Western Europe, warning against complacency amid a potential Korean truce.
A Meadowlark passenger train from Chicago to Cypress derailed after a track washout near Shelbyville Illinois. Fireman C L Mills and Mail Clerk Robert Boatright were killed, with two crew members dead and about a dozen passengers injured. Engineer J R Beach, of Villa Grove, reported the rain weakened the track.
The Army estimates enemy casualties in Korea at 1 185 464 through June 20 up 22 964 from a week earlier. Combined Chinese and Korean Red Battle losses total 860 300 with non battle losses at 162 103. Prisoners number 163 061, including 16 970 Chinese and the rest North Koreans.
The Weather Bureau reports clear mornings and partly cloudy afternoons with continued warmth in Amarillo and vicinity. Today highs near 95 with a low around 69, tomorrow up to 97, and the 24 hour period ending this morning seeing a high of 92 and a low of 66 with a trace precipitation. West Texas remains partly cloudy and warm through tonight and Saturday while New Mexico stays generally fair with a few eastern thunderstorms.
Four people were injured in a morning crash at the Wolflin Avenue and Georgia Street intersection. Mrs. Mary Goodwin Steele, 826 Louisiana, is in critical condition with head injuries at Northwest Texas Hospital. Janna Steele, 2, also has head injuries and is in poor condition. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Dannevick of Moriarty New Mexico are in fairly good condition. Dannevick has a broken pelvis and head injuries. The collision occurred about 12 45 a m. Steele drove north on Georgia Street while Dannevick traveled east on Wolflin Avenue. Both cars were demolished and victims were taken to the hospital.
The State Department announced Czechoslovakia will release two Western pilots and their US jet fighters. Lt Luther G. Roland of Hummelstown Pennsylvania and Lt Rhvern Johansen, a Norwegian trainee, were held since emergency landings near Prague on June 8 during a training flight in the American occupation zone of Germany. The Czech note followed a protest by Ambassador Ellis O Briggs. The timing of the release was not stated.
Two US Air Force B-36s landed at Lakenheath Air Base England after a 24 hour 5000 mile flight from Texas. A third plane, which departed Carswell Air Force Base near Fort Worth yesterday, was expected to arrive soon.

Elmer Staats told Senate Finance Committee that after the current military buildup, maintaining the armed forces could cost 40 billion yearly. He projected fiscal 1953 spending at 80 to 90.9 billion, with direct military outlays 55 to 65 billion and total military-related costs peaking before leveling to about 4 billion annually for a standing force of 3.5 million. Taft questioned civilian staffing and potential waste.
Canberra reports Mt Lamington in New Guinea vented a new blow-off, following a deadly eruption on January 21 that claimed about 4,000 Papuans and 35 Europeans. The latest activity was described as mild.
About 150 people attended a tea at the Amarillo Children’s Home honoring donor Mrs. Inez Carter who provided a $45,000 cottage in memory of her mother Mrs. Phebe Worley and partner Albert Combs. The residence seats 14 children with a house mother, and will house 56 with four cottages on campus.
The National Mediation Board announced that the 11 day United Air Lines strike has been settled and pilots and co pilots will return to work this afternoon on terms proposed by the airline earlier this week.
