Rail Retirement Changes Affect 5000 in Area
President Truman signed a law boosting railroad retirement benefits for about 5,000 Panhandle workers. The plan raises the average annuity from 70 to 84 dollars monthly and the average pension from 50 to 71 dollars, with a flat 20 percent increase for most beneficiaries. Some checks may be delayed and widow’s pensions rise in some cases. Survivor annuities under 1946 amendments stay unchanged. The act also credits workers’ retirement taxes and widens beneficiary rights while adjusting Railroad Unemployment Insurance rates based on balances. McDaniel, Ama illo branch manager, notes earnings guidance and offers help at 113% West Fifth Street.
