At Stadium Park Chicago the 50-year-old Hopeful Frank from Roosevelt stables opened as a 2 to 1 favorite to win the 26th Democratic Presidential Sweepstakes. Trainer Farley praised his speed and stamina while Clark Gable Ritchie looms as stiff competition.
Berlin reports a three cornered strike among South German states the Von Papen government and Adolf Hitler as Nationalists call for restoration of the Kaiser. Alfred Hugenberg led a party caucus favoring monarchy while four more people were killed in clashes and Hitler met with Von Papen and Von Schleicher in Berlin.
Carlsbad veterinarian Dr. F. W. Cook was found shot to death in his car near Roswell New Mexico. A coroner's jury ruled the death the result of murder by an unidentified assailant.
Amarillo attorney general candidate Clem Calhoun challenged incumbent James V. Allred to a series of joint debates in Dallas. The proposal came June 27 as Calhoun pressed for public discussion of policy.
James Mattern of Fort Worth and Bennett Griffen of Oklahoma City planned a Wednesday takeoff from Floyd Bennett airport to attempt a globe circling flight and beat the eight days fifteen hours record set by Wiley Post and Harold Gatty last year. The big red white and blue monoplane is nearly ready with modern gear, two sets of controls, and no name. It was once owned by Carl Cromwell of San Angelo, who died in an auto crash in Pennsylvania a year ago. Mattern previously flew for Cromwell.
About 80 precinct county and district candidates paid fees up to 125 dollars to seek the Potter County Democratic ticket with July 23 primaries and an August runoff. Two candidates withdrew at the last minute Judge Henry Bishop and G T Oliver. The signing deadline was midnight Saturday. Ballots will be printed immediately and today was the last day for filing campaign expense statements.
Tonight the Panhandle hosts its first big rally for Mrs Phebe K Warner for Congresswoman-at-large Place No 2 at the courthouse. The 146th Infantry Band opens with a concert before speeches at 6 15 in the district courtroom. Ernest C Cox of Corsicana will appear with Mrs Warner and the Newell trio provides music.
Judge James C. Wilson ruled for the plaintiff in a federal civil suit, Hiram K Aynesworth administrator for C T Dobbins estate v Alice E Wager and others, involving a property deed. In a separate matter Clinton G Hickey v Ed Mayer and Johnson Ranch Royalty Company Inc, defendants to answer the bill filed May 22 1931 when court convenes this afternoon.
Half the remaining 14 mile strip of paving on U S 66 between Shamrock and the Oklahoma line will be opened Friday. The second seven mile stretch will be opened August 15 completing the paving on this highway in Wheeler County and leaving the 14 mile gap near Jericho as the only unfinished part east of Amarillo.
Six people died as floods swept through South Central Oklahoma with more showers forecast. A wagon plunged into Rush Creek after a bridge collapsed near Kilgore School House, leaving eight survivors and two drowned women identified as Mrs. John Lindsey and Mrs. Calvin Lindsey. The tally includes three young Lindsey children.
