Chicago June 24 The 18th amendment repeal is urged by University of Chicago President Robert M Hutchins as a youth program draws applause. A compromise plank would let states reconsider repeal with safeguards. The convention may back a nonbinding pledge to let states vote again on the issue.
Alfred E. Smith told Carl L. Estes that Speaker John Nance Garner has an excellent chance of gaining influence at the coming convention. Smith urged Texas delegates to stay firm and not treat their Garner vote as a mere gesture.
J M Gardenhire a Democratic National Convention delegate said he will sponsor a resolution to deny former Gov Alfred E Smith floor privileges and declare him ineligible as a presidential candidate unless he pledges to abide by the convention and back its nominee Roosevelt silent on stop Roosevelt efforts in Chicago with press unable to question him at the Albany mansion until later.

Dispatches from Colima report another earthquake and a smaller tidal wave struck Cuyutlan late yesterday. The town had been evacuated and caused no damage or loss of life. Earlier toll from the former tidal wave was placed at 100.

California bonus army units moved east through Texas on June 24 led by an advance guard. several hundred remained behind in El Paso and Abilene planning a northward turn toward Wichita Falls and Fort Worth. Big Spring hosted 400 marchers as 800 total passed through, with hundreds riding trains and autos heading toward Washington to seek immediate bonus payments.

J N Vernon acting mayor says the official canvass of the June 14 special mayoralty election will be made Tuesday night. Ross Rogers leads Lon Marrs by 179 votes and needed 18 more to tie Marrs and third candidate H A Daniel. If runoff is required it will be set for July 14 or 15.
Lausanne June 24 German Chancellor Von Papen and French Premier Herriot opened Franco German talks on reparations seeking compromise. After a half hour private session they called in a score of associates and emerged after two hours arm in arm, signaling urgent negotiations ahead.
A 26 member medical detachment from California and Washington left Abilene bypassing the Sweetwater protest. They berth at three free camps, plan to head to Wichita Falls and then Washington carrying more than $1000 in medicines and accompanied by ten women including four registered nurses. They deny being train riders and say they travel in their own equipment and are self supporting.
Rainfall in Amarillo pushes June toward a record with six days remaining as the city nears the 40 year mark. The forecast calls for partly cloudy skies tonight and Saturday with showers likely, as rain ranges from light to heavy across the Panhandle. The House sent the Garn er Wagner Relief Bill to conference with the Senate to reconcile differences. Conferees include Rep Collier Crisp Rainey Treadway Bacharach and Sen Norbeck Brookhart Wagner. The measure saves 150 to 175 million dollars and aims to balance next year’s budget while expanding Red Cross relief by 50 million bushels of farm board wheat.
Logan County officers said Clifton Davis held in jail here was identified as one of the robbers who looted the First National Bank of Shamrock Texas for 7900 dollars on March 4. H D Little charged with murder in the killing of Guthrie grocer Karl Rucker, a Shamrock robber.
The city jail was found empty again this morning with no arrests or burglaries reported by police last night. A reporter noted the lack of activity and offered no new incidents to record.
Dallas June 24 Denominational conferences opened the 43rd annual convention of the Texas Christian Endeavor Union with 1500 registrations today and expectations up to 2000 by tomorrow night.
