Dewey Trails on First Ballot at Republican Convention

On the first roll call at the Republican convention Gov. Thomas E. Dewey stood 114 votes short of the 548 needed, with totals showing Dewey 434, Taft 224, Stassen 157, Vandenberg 62, Dirksen 1, and others. The second ballot was anticipated as Dewey’s aides aimed to win decisive support as states reconsidered their endorsements.

Phantom burglaries hit four homes in Amarillo area

A busy nighttime thief entered four Amarillo area houses by removing window screens, stealing money and valuables. Victims at 804 Pierce reported purses with $25 and $7 later found in yards. others lost wallets, a watch, trousers and a billfold. A prior night also yielded two more burglaries with similar methods.

Amarillo Summer Band Concert Opens in Sam Houston Park

The Amarillo Summer School Band performs at 8:15 p m Thursday in Sam Houston Park as the first in eight park concerts this season. Clyde Rowe directs the band with a grassy auditorium set for about 5 000 people. If rain arrives the concert will be postponed to next week under Jack Haas’s supervision.
