Lieutenant Russel L. Maughan lands at Crissey Field San Francisco after a 21 hour 47 minute cross country flight from Mitchell Field New York. He endured fatigue nausea and five refuel stops to celebrate a sustained aviation feat in front of cheering crowds.
Mrs. Russell L. Maughan praised her husband Lieutenant Maughan after completing the New York to San Francisco dawn to dusk flight. She said he was inspired by service and progress rather than personal glory and that the trip was planned all winter.
Lieutenant Maughan flies a 375 horsepower single seater from Mitchel Field into a half moon sky. He battles rough weather, lands near army headquarters with the crowd cheering as San Francisco Bay fades below. He averages about 150 miles per hour, staying under and over 2000 feet. The aircraft shows perfect mechanical condition on arrival.
Supporters and friends of Lynch Davidson, candidate for governor, are urged to attend a booster meeting in the district courtroom at 8 o'clock tonight. R Underwood will preside as plans are made for a peace campaign for Mr. Id a.
Tex Thornton a shooter for United States Torpedo company, wearing an asbestos suit, removed twisted drill stems from Barnum well near Hutchinson County and entered the cellar guiding a wire line over hot tools. Oil men say he prepared to shoot the gas fire at dawn. Officials from Minor Producers at Artesia seek Thornton to shoot their No 3 well six miles east of Artesia showing strong production at 1 900 feet
Judge R W Hall urged Amarillo Lions to vote and support good citizenship at the noon gathering in the Amarillo hotel. He called ballot control a test of virtue and noted differences among women voters while praising a program featuring Dr S E Thompson and stories by Rev F W O Malley and a strong veteran guard message from J N Riggs. The Kiwanis quartet entertained and Judge Gee presided with C H Dix supervising.
Chicago police investigate threats against wealthy residents in the Gold Coast tied to a wave of death kidnap and mutilation notes. Edward Hines and Dr Homer Warren received demands for 20000 and 5000 dollars signed by cranks using aliases The Red Peppers and Mrs N. in ads linked to the case.
Federal court has adjourned. Judge James Wilson and reporter J A Feagin and Deputy US Marshal Doug Campbell left last night for Dallas.
Officials announced a North Plains trade trip in late July or August to advertise the Amarillo Tri-State exposition. The auto caravan will span about two days with extended stops in North Plains towns and aims for broader county participation and booths. The excursion could boost interest in the Panhandle North Plains railway and ties to Amarillo’s trade area.

American travelers aboard the steamship President Madison faced stringent and discourteous Japanese customs checks at Yokohama. Officials halted foreign passengers and forced an intensified search, including shoe removal, before higher authorities intervened and apologized. Affected passengers included at least one woman.

Sheriff Less Whitaker will deliver the season's first 1924 wheat harvest from his Potter county fields to the Harry Elevator Co. Binders started at noon in the Whitaker field, five miles east of Amarillo, with a threshing machine awaiting grain. Whitaker, owning 20 acres plus partnerships with John Asher, expects about twenty bushels per acre despite a dry spell.
Premier Herriott of France, after meetings with the British prime minister, says Great Britain and Belgium will aid France as in 1914. He quotes Independence Belge reporting a defensive pact. He asserts that a German attack would find England standing with France and Belgium.
A year ago the high reached 94 degrees while today tops at 92 with a low of 70 versus 66 last year. The forecast calls for generally fair skies and continued warmth tonight and tomorrow.
Gas was struck in the Blackwell No 1, Boren in Garza county three miles east of Justiceburg and eighteen miles southeast of Post. The well, owned by B W Blackwell of Amarillo and drilled by Frank Phelps, shows gas from 685 to 731 feet and is increasing with depth to 1400 feet.
Forty one prisoners escaped Shelby County Jail in Memphis by digging through a three foot brick wall using an iron cot and a table knife and fork. Four were recaptured during the night as deputies pursued the others. Sheriff W S Knight named H Diggs Nolen as the mastermind behind the break, noting Nolen is serving nineteen years in state and federal prisons for forgery and narcotics violations.
A blast on the British freighter Egremont Castle at its Brooklyn dock injures multiple workers. Seven men badly burned rushed to hospitals, two missing, with about 10 000 cases of naptha aboard. The ship, owned by Barber Steamship Lines, arrived June 15 and was to sail July 3 for the Orient via Newport News. Two tugs towed the blaze into the East River to prevent further explosions.
The Plains pipeline moved five tank cars carrying 1,250 barrels of high grade crude from the Panhandle field to Port Arthur on Sunday and Monday. The oil belongs to Texas Company and marks the field’s initial shipment. A small pump currently serves the line, with a larger 250 barrel per hour pump to be connected soon.

Paris reports political circles stress recognition of the Soviet government by France as essential. Premier Herriot's stance mirrors Poincare's, linking recognition to Soviet acknowledgment of Russia's debts. The new government is not pressed to vow new payments, only to regard existing claims as bona fide. The issue may be tackled early by the new premier after Brussels.
The Democratic rules committee retained the two thirds nomination rule by an overwhelming vote. Mrs. Leroy Springs was elected chairman of the credentials committee. Madison Square Garden hosted thirteen thousand delegates as Pat Harrison urged unity and harmony while condemning the Harding Coolidge administration.
The Democratic convention opened at Madison Square Garden New York at 12:43 after police cleared a traffic jam delaying hundreds. Chairman Hull appeared refreshed after earlier exhaustion and heat stroke as he brought the assembled delegates to order.
