At a private Amarillo Fair theater exhibition, eighteen members voted to show the film Three Weeks with fifteen opposing. The meeting drew strong views including ministers and women club representatives arguing it corrupts youth, while supporters praised its artistic and educational value.
More than 700 visitors from Dalhart to Paducah gathered in Memphis for the annual West Texas Chamber of Commerce district convention. J. W. Cheney of Amarillo urged a state park for Palo Duro canyons while F R Phillips spoke on Rural Education and B M Whitaker discussed Cotton Planting in the Panhandle. The event closed late this afternoon.
A violent summer storm across Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Illinois killed five people, damaged property, and threatened Chicago’s water supply. The Calumet river reversed, sewage spilled into Lake Michigan, the steamer Saugatuck with 700 aboard rode out the storm, and six government planes were wrecked in Omaha.
Efforts continue to lasso a drill bit resting on the gas pipe of the Barnum No 1 gasser in South Hutchinson county. The fire threatens to flare when the spout is shot, likely Wednesday, said owner R G Barnum. Heat has bent and twisted the bit around the drill stump, and previous lasso attempts failed. The well has burned since Thursday afternoon and is not expected to be shot before Wednesday.
Waxahachie Texas hosts the 1935 annual Ellis County Odd Fellows meeting on July 11 in Getzenberger Memorial Park. B H Hutchison newly elected president aims to make the gathering the association’s best to date and include a large picnic as a feature.
Reports from Tokio and Los Angeles reveal heightened anti American sentiment after two Japanese men were slain near San Pedro. Officials link murders to criminal warfare rather than the Japanese American question. Police guard American residents as investigations unfold.
Philadelphia scored two in the seventh and carried a 7 hit effort to defeat Boston 9 to 4. Harris and Arkins led Philadelphia while Murray, Ross and O Neill paced the Boston lineup.
The Amarillo Advertising and Salesmanship club votes to stage a pure food show and industrial exposition July 7 to 12 in the business district. Proceeds fund local delegates for the Galveston Ad club convention, with Galveston hosting the 1925 event after Amarillo bid for 1924. EFC Paso is Amarillo’s only rival. Rev F W O Malley urged salesmanship to accompany advertising.
Garza County plans a large agricultural and commercial exhibit for the Amarillo Tri State Exposition this fall. George Samson formerly of Amarillo is gathering crop specimens for the fair and aims to win the county prize. He urges nearby counties to join in and notes Garza’s eight first prizes at last year’s state fair. Pledges exceed ten counties for exhibits.
Amid growing gasoline stocks, prices fell 1 to 2 cents per gallon in the Middle West and South. Standard Oil of Kentucky led with a 2 cent cut, Ohio and New York divisions followed with 1 to 2 cent reductions as weak demand and rising crude supply push prices lower.
London announces a preliminary inter allied conference to be held in London around July 16 with hopes for American representation. Washington notes no invitation yet and reiterates policy against European discussions while keeping options open for future cooperation. New York reports on Democratic pre convention fever as McAdoo and Smith vie for the nomination and convention planning proceeds at Madison Square.
James McClusker aged 60, engineer on the Texas special passenger train operated by the St. Louis-San Francisco railway and Missouri-Kansas-Texas railroad, died at the throttle while slowing at a water tank in North McAlester Oklahoma. Death attributed to heart disease.
Lieut. Russell L. Maughan started from Mitchell Field New York heading for Crissy Field San Francisco in a 375 horsepower single seater aiming to complete the transcontinental daylight flight in about sixteen hours and forty minutes. He stopped at Dayton St Joseph Cheyenne Decatur Quincy and North Platte with refueling and rest breaks along the way reporting the aircraft in excellent working order.
The weatherman forecasts continued warm and fair weather tonight and tomorrow. Today’s high reached 96 and the low at midnight was 68, compared with 90 and 63 a year ago.
William G. McAdoo declared Progressive Democracy will restore government from privilege and debauchery and set it on the high road of moral standards. He spoke to delegates from nine western states Hawaii and the Philippines gathered in New York, facing cheering crowds from a balcony at his uptown hotel.
