Japs Inch Closer to Alaska in Aleutians

A War Department briefing reports Japanese landing forces advancing along the Aleutian chain toward Alaska and establishing positions at Kiska about 585 miles from Dutch Harbor. Air strikes are said to have hit a cruiser and a transport, with weather limiting operations and occasional clear spells enabling limited air activity against Kiska.

Amarillo Bandit Steals Quarters After Cash Drops

The so called big money bandit strikes three Amarillo service stations taking $118 in all. He targets tills late at night at Bivins service station 218 Fillmore Street Killough Store 215 Pierce Street and Virg Rowland station 301 East Tenth Avenue. Victims Floyd Batson Dick Willis and Harry Keller report the robber used a gun and forced an escort to the alley after the heist. Police believe the same man committed all three robberies.

Names Mixed in Amarillo Shooting

A man charged with assault with intent to murder in the Amarillo shooting of Lloyd H. Blankenship was identified as W. A. Carter, not the Plains Chevrolet sales manager. Carter posted a $1,000 bond and was released. Blankenship was wounded in the hand near McKinley School on West Seventh Avenue.

Water storage tank contract awarded for Amarillo school

Williams & Whittle Inc of Dallas wins a contract for water line labor and storage tanks at Amarillo Army Technical School with a second contract to C K Howard and Co of Oklahoma City for a pumping plant. A third contract to C S Lambie and Co of Amarillo covers a control tower. Bids under $1,000,000. Williams & Whittle bid 350,696 including material estimated at 260,000. Tests wells to be drilled by D J Muncy at 445 each, minimum 325 feet deep with 1 per foot beyond. City seeks land leases for test sites and urges applicants for new water line connections.

The Red army marines and civilians held Sevastopol on its 16th day of siege while Soviet forces on the Kharkov and Bryansk fronts pushed back German troops.
