A 40 year old cottonwood on the Potter County courthouse square was cut down after county officials and former city forester B Howell said fungus and malnutrition threatened the square’s other trees. The removal required careful felling to avoid damage to the old library.
Berlin reports say Gen McNarney disclosed plans to reduce occupation troops in Germany from 350000 to 150000 with a three to one ratio of combat to support elements. He hinted at independent American action if Allies fail to unite Germany and denied Berlin withdrawal rumors. He upheld the anti marriage policy and Jewish asylum in the American zone and denied border closures.
A Dallas explosion rocked the Baker Hotel basement causing five deaths and many injuries. Firemen wore gas masks as ambulances ferried victims from the site and nearby Baylor and Parkland hospitals treated the injured. Witnesses described a dull thunderous blast and shattered windows as downtown streets closed for rescue efforts.
Dallas authorities filed murder charges against five men tied to violence during Juneteenth celebrations. Six people were killed in the unrest that marred the city’s Negro holiday observance on Wednesday.

Elizabeth Melba Vibbard nine dies after a horse collision near 2436 North West Tenth in Amarillo. Her father Denny E. Vibbard was fatally injured April 30 from a horse fall following a cardiac episode. Elizabeth leaves Mae Wibbard Robert D. Wibbard Ruth Robertson and grandmother Bessie Rice. Col. James A Kilian pleaded innocent to charges of authorizing and permitting cruel punishment of prisoners at the Lichfield reinforcement depot he commanded. The plea followed three days of defense motions overruled by the court. A witness, Pfc Joseph De Felice, received six months and a 240 dollar fine for breaking confinement and disrespect to an officer.
The United States proposed a four power control commission with military backing to keep Japan disarmed for 25 years. Britain China Russia and the U S would oversee complete demilitarization including removal of arms bases and atomic materials. An inspection system would enforce disarmament with mutual action if violations occur and the treaty would become effective after ratification by all four governments with possible renewal after 25 years.
An explosion in the basement of the five million dollar Baker Hotel in Dallas caused numerous casualties. Emergency crews battled the aftermath as investigators began assessing the blast site and stabilizing injured.
City officials revisit the Canadian River, 18 miles north, as a potential municipal supply. Studies by the Corps of Engineers and the Bureau of Reclamation, plus a 1941 district engineer report, weigh flood control, conservation, and dam feasibility while noting the river’s high silt load and harder, higher mineral content than current supply.
The South Canadian River drainage covers about 30 650 square miles with 21 inches mean annual rainfall. A 20 000 square mile section could drain toward a proposed Texas reservoir near Amarillo. Four major tributaries join the Canadian including Pajarito Creek Ute Creek Tucumcari Creek and Major Long's Creek. The Corps of Engineers reports major flood damage has affected railroad and highway bridges and pipeline crossings.
The Baker Motel explosion casualty list includes William E. Cotton Dallas purchasing agent for the Baker Hotel killed by falling debris. Also named are J. P. Parker assistant pastor J. W. Thomas Jack Raymond and many others with ages listed. Injured are Dallas residents and Mesquite Tex. residents.
Don Doughty a 12 year old of Pleasant Valley was treated at Stoe Hospital with a leg wound after shooting himself at home about 10 30 this morning. This marks a second recent gun accident involving the boy who earlier damaged his hip in a rabbit hunting incident. He was expected to be released from the hospital this afternoon.
Over 36 years at least 18 people died in Canadian River floods as planners weigh three dam sites Amarillo near Dumas and Tascosa. Amarillo site could hold 450000 acre feet Sanford 425000 and Tascosa 1280000 acre feet. Sanford dam would lift Amarillo water 700 to 800 feet by pumps while other sites require 200 to 400 feet.
