Arthur Brisbane notes Amelia Earhart's Atlantic flight highlights American grit. He surveys Germany's stratosphere plane ambitions and a Berlin backed program to shuttle passengers in artificial atmosphere. He also comments on New York dance fatigue, a Greek labor strike, and maritime crime amid urban moral satire.
Representative James T. Igoe of Illinois told the Democratic delegation leaving Chicago for Houston he would urge former Senator James Hamilton Lewis of Illinois as a vice presidential candidate with Governor Smith. Charles Evans Hughes in Europe said Herbert Hoover is equipped for the presidency and predicted a Republican victory. Hoover plans to keep the New York preconvention organization and make the city office the eastern campaign HQ.
June 20 report says a tornado struck Webb City Oklahoma wiping out a business block. One woman and a child were killed. Communications were out to Burbank and Gravida with seventeen oil rigs reported toppled. No further details available.
United Press reports severe electrical storms and winds swept the middle west causing about 1 million dollars in property and crop damage. Five people died including four Indiana University staff struck by lightning in Bloomington. A 10 year old boy died near Newark Ohio and over twenty injured in Ohio towns. Webb City Missouri suffered major cyclone damage.
Severe thunder storms and torrential rains in St. Louis caused the Des Peres River to exceed its banks flooding more than 20 city blocks in South St. Louis. Families were rescued from homes by motor boats. No casualties reported.
A June 20 explosion at the National Mine of National Fuel near Morgantown WV killed five miners and seriously injured seven. Two of the injured were not expected to survive. The blast occurred just before night shift, with 25 men in the mine. thirteen escaped or were rescued. The State Department of Mines reported twenty entombed elsewhere in Monongalia County at the National Coal Mining drift mine, which normally employs about 100 men.
In Chicago, officials including Mayor William Hale Thompson and Michael J. Faherty were found in circuit court to conspire in hiring real estate experts for city work at a cost of 1,732,279 dollars. Judge Hugo Friend ordered restitution to the city. The suit cited financing Thompson's political activities and private gain. Separately, Amarillo voters may cast ballots without poll receipts if they moved there after January 1, 1927 and lived in Potter county six months. The attorney general ruled residency and state or city poll taxes do not bar voting.
Empty cells, made vacant Monday when thirteen short term Federal prisoners were released from the Potter county jail were again filled last night, when Sheriff Wiley Pollard and several deputies arrested sixteen men. Most charged with liquor law violations and vagrancy. They were captured in three raids on beer joints. Nearly sixty gallons of beer in the making and about 200 bottles were confiscated.
Walter T. Caylor of 2206 South Polk street left for Tientsin China last evening after enlisting in the 15th Infantry through the local recruiting station in the Federal Building. Sergeant Earl Lyles reports Caylor has served four previous enlistments and seen service in many parts of the world.
Six armed men at Toronto Union Station held express messengers at gunpoint and stole three registered mail pouches valued up to 100000. They fled in a car after posing as buyers for a sedan as police arrived on the scene.
The tenth annual West Texas Chamber of Commerce convention closes with sessions on officer elections resolutions and an address by James W. Gerard on World Wide Problems. Nomination of vice presidents and directors proceeds with no clear recommendation yet for president among four candidates.
Bootleg king George Remus to be freed from Lima’s state hospital by Ohio supreme court ruling. In Columbus a two day Merchants Fair and Pure Food Show at Lindy Land July 12 to 14 features a baby show, country store, and displays by local merchants with booths priced at two dollars per front foot.
J P Black of The Globe News composing room boasts a local record with sweet peas this year. He cultivates an 85 foot vine covered fence behind his home at 905 Sunset in Country Club. This morning he brought nearly 200 blossoms to the newspaper office in one day and says such crops have continued for about three weeks. The blooms are large, hardy and colorful with two foot high vines.
A public opinion canvass on Amarillo’s proposed municipal airport is to be conducted within a week by the Board of City Development after a city commission discussion with Ed R. Mayer president of the board. Mayer hopes to report to the commission next Tuesday night or the following week. Local aviation growth and links to transcontinental air and rail networks were emphasized. Lieut. Robert W. Gray noted that Wichita Falls and Abilene have airports and push traffic away from Amarillo.
In Oklahoma City on June 20 Miss Ruby Renfro a Woodbine Texas nurse was freed on bond after five witnesses testified to her character. Bond set at four thousand dollars for Renfro who faces a preliminary hearing Thursday on a criminal assault charge in the shooting of Paul Showalter. Accomplice nurse Miss Mary Atkinson remains jailed unable to post bond and both plead not guilty.
At the Amarillo Real Estate Board luncheon, J. M. Sheers of the Wichita Falls Building and Loan association spoke on cooperation between realtors and loan groups. Reports from Charles Short Jim McKenzie and John B. Gilvin praised Amarillo citizens' goodwill toward Liberal during the prior week.
D. E. McGrath assistant district attorney who served as door supervisor at the last Democratic convention in New York will leave Amarillo Saturday over the Santa Fe to attend the convention in Houston on June 26.
Sammie Brown, a negro woman, went to trial in district criminal court this morning on theft charges. Police found about $400 worth of jewelry in her rooms concealed in pillows and under the floor.
London reports Roald Amundsen left Tromsoe in a Farman seaplane to join the Italia rescue mission. After 40 hours no concrete news on Amundsen and René Guilbaud's party, the Arctic mysteries deepen as efforts to locate the aircraft continue.
General Umberto Nobile and five Italia crew members have been found after 26 days on the polar ice. Major Maddalena reports locating the camp and that provisions were dropped to aid Guilbaud's crew, who planned to reach Kings Bay or northeast land ice. Rumors linked Amundsen with sightings near Green Harbor amid drift reports.
Miss Amelia Earhart the first woman to fly the Atlantic arrives in London with Wilmer Stultz and Louisa Gordon aboard the Friendship. She wears borrowed clothes, greets reporters, and plans engagements with Mrs. Alanson Boughton and the British air league luncheon, plus a shopping tour. Continues on page two.
