Four Amarillo youths confess in fatal highway crash

Four boys aged 16 to 24 were arrested and confessed they drove the truck that fatally injured T. H. Graham, 58, on the North highway near Amarillo. They faced negligent homicide charges. Graham died at St. Anthony's hospital after his skull and body were crushed.

Chaplin divorce suit readied for August trial

United Press reports two legal preliminaries remain as Charles Spencer Chaplin case moves toward trial on August 22. Mrs Liza Grey Chaplin will meet with her husband's lawyers to finish deposition, and Thursday is the deadline to file her answer to the cross complaint alleging excessive drinking and neglect of two children.

Amarillo Girl Attacked by Strange Man on Bus

A 19 year old Amarillo girl reports being followed after exiting a bus near Glenwood. She claims a man seized her from behind, beat her, choked her, and dragged her behind a garage before leaving. Police and a physician describe the assailant as unknown and possibly mani aacal. A man and wife were noted in early police reports.

Karnival Tonight At Kiwanis Armory

Tonight the Kiwanis Karnival at the Armory Fifth and Adama streets opens at 8 and runs to midnight. Admission is two dollars and fifty cents for a man and his family, with 2,500 Kiwanis scrip to spend on amusements. Orla Allen hails the event as among the greatest yet in the city. Proceeds fund civic welfare projects. Speakers from chambers of commerce and Amarillo College noted club activities and past year efforts.

Three Vinita Bank Bandits Captured Near Strang

Three alleged bank bandits who escaped from Vinita jail were recaptured near Strang in Delaware county at daybreak. Craig and Delaware county officers located them hiding in a farmer's barn and forced their surrender after the barn was riddled with shots.

Youth Gets Suspended Sentence for Theft

Clarence Maxwell pleaded guilty to theft of an automobile in district court and requested a suspended sentence. He received a four year suspended sentence. John Morris stood trial later the same day before Judge Henry Kishop on an auto theft charge and was denied a suspended sentence.

The American delegation proposed extending the 5 5 3 plan to cruisers destroyers and submarines with tonnage limits for the United States Great Britain and Japan and Ambassador Gibson outlined President Coolidge’s message of cooperation.

Held defends Trans-Mississippi title with 73 at Colorado Springs

In Colorado Springs on June 20 a brisk breeze kept scores high at the Trans-Mississippi golf tournament. Eddie Held, the 1926 champion, posted 73 amid gusting winds as eleven players broke 81 by noon. Held produced a standout moment driving from beneath a pine branch on the 12th green.

Woodruff urges Amarillo to lead Route 66 development west

At the Highway 66 Association convention in Amarillo John T. Woodruff urged the city to take the initiative in developing Route 66 west of Amarillo to equalize progress with the northeast. Reports showed two thirds of the route between Amarillo and Chicago paved, with Missouri and Kansas portions advancing and Oklahoma partially paved.

Jury Probes Roxana Slaying In Panhandle

The Carson county grand jury opened an inquiry into the Roxana slaying of Charley Blair, a 60 year old oil well driller, after a shooting near Roxana Sunday. J Archie Parker, 26, surrendered and is held in Panhandle jail. Blair’s wife Mrs Blair was wounded in the leg. The quarrel cited involved Parker over alleged attentions to Mrs Parker. Parker ran a Roxana machine shop.

Tilden Opens Wimbledon Victory Bid in Straight Sets

William T. Tilden, American star, opened his bid for the Wimbledon singles championship by defeating G. A. Pratt of England in straight sets. He swept the scores 6-2, 6-1, 6-0 in the first round, completing the match in forty minutes.

Kansas Storm Causes Heavy Damage Across Kansas Fields

Reports from June indicate storms in the Southwest causing major damage to homes and extensive wheat crops in Kansas. Winds near tornado strength and heavy rains battered Parsons with about 20 000 dollars damage, Salina Burlington and Independence reported over four inches of rain, creeks rose and then subsided with no loss of life reported.

Ammunition Smuggled Across Border Seized Near Matamoros

Military authorities in Matamoros report the seizure of 10,000 rounds of ammunition smuggled across the river near the city. Four men who were with the rifle cartridges fled the scene as authorities responded.
