Nations default on war debt payments prompt major conference

Washington reports show expected collections on the 144 million US war debt installments to fall under 9 percent. France and Belgium default on large sums, Yugoslavia and Estonia also in doubt, while Great Britain and Italy indicate partial payments. Potter County Seeks 180000 Federal Relief Funds

Potter County filed for 180000 of a 200 million federal rehabilitation and relief allotment for an emergency relief program. County Commissioner Frank Luckingham led the Austin submission with surveys completed, data in Washington, and plans for bridges, road resurfacing, a courthouse lawn project, a library addition, a fireproof county farm building, and sprinkling systems. Amarillo also prepared to apply as Mayor Ross D. Rogers was away.

Cox elected chair of monetary committee at world conference

The United States won a hard fought victory as James M. Cox was elected chairman of the monetary committee by the steering committee. The vote was unanimous after a compromise among factions. Guido Jung became vice chair and Georges Bonnet was named reporter. Hendryk Collijn was chosen to head the economic committee.

Oil Industry Gathers for U S Control Effort in Chicago

Producers met in Chicago to push toward a federal supervised code of fair competition under the recovery act. New York’s Axtel Byles led the gathering with 24 associations from 11 states attending seeking coordinated industry controls. Petitions circulating in Amarillo aim to expand the city commission to five members through three charter changes. The proposals call for a two year term special election of two additional commissioners, division of the city into four precincts, and election of one commissioner from each precinct plus a mayor at large at the next regular city election.
