Jail trusty returns to jail after surrender to reporter

James Shofner a 26 year old well known courthouse figure surrendered to a Globe reporter and was returned to Potter County Jail after failing to pay 27.20 in court costs for theft. He had been paroled recently but again ran afoul of the law and said he hoped to regain his old trusty courthouse job.

Civic leader L. W. Boyles dies at 56 in Borger

W. L. Tubby Boyles, 56, longtime Borger civic leader and former Panhandle mayor, died after a heart attack at North Plains Hospital. He moved to Panhandle in 1920, founded Nash auto agency, later Universal Oil. He chaired Carson County and 31st District Democratic groups, was a Lions Club founder, reshaped Panhandle War Dads, and served in WWII Rent See note.

Regiment Accused of Cowardice Lost 90 Per Cent of Officers

The 31st Regiment of the Seventh Division faced serious charges after a three day Korea battle last November. Army records show only 10 officers of over 100 were available by December 1, with about 2,860 men repelling over 20,000 Chinese before a UN withdrawal. Sporrer’s allegations of rear-escape are called fantastic by the Army. Ridgway praised his conduct as chaplain.

Wedemeyer backs MacArthur in Korea policies in Senate inquiry

General Wedemeyer testified for a third day on MacArthur's dismissal controversy about direct strikes at Red China. He urged withdrawing U.S. troops from Korea if MacArthur proposals fail, supported Roosevelt era efforts to win Russia in the war against Japan, and warned against recognizing Red China. He also cited Congress as a source of constructive Asian policy ideas and favored negotiating a Japan peace treaty independently if needed.

Price order on clothing is due

Amarillo stayed dry last night but forecasts call for thundershowers this evening with warmer temperatures. Early morning skies showed threatening thunderclouds though no rain. Nearby Tucumcari NM reported .82 inches, Tulsa 0.6 inches, with traces at Dalhart Perryton and Clayton NM. Tomorrow’s high around 84 and tonight’s low near 60. Yesterday’s high was 75 and the low 59.

Eyewitness account of Eniwetok a bomb tests

With the US Second Division in Korea a soldier, Corporal John E Divecchio, has studied Chinese for weeks using words overheard from Chinese prisoners of war. He attempts an interrogation in Chinese but the prisoner replies in English, exposing language gaps and cultural mixups.

First Wheat Delivered at Claude Elevator

Claude June 13 The first load of 1951 wheat arrived at 9 am brought by Lee Hess from 16 miles southeast. It tested 60 pounds with 14 percent moisture. Hess grows 25 acres of Early Wichita with another taters variety. yield about 15 bushels per acre. Hess received a premium as the market price stood at 2.15 dollars per bushel. Hess stores his wheat as general cutting isn’t expected to begin until next week.

Amarillo and vicinity expect scattered thundershowers tonight and Thursday, with today’s high around 82 and a low near 60, and tomorrow’s high about 84. Panhandle agricultural outlook calls for widely scattered thundershowers, mainly afternoon and evening, increasing chances late tomorrow night. West Texas and New Mexico forecasts show similar patterns with scattered showers and little temperature change.
