Amarillo police stated Harry Fleisher known as the Detroit Purple gangster was sought for the 1931 murders of Lebovitz Luth er and Paul. He was believed to have come to Amarillo with a friend who formerly worked for a bus company. The friend sent his trunk to Amarillo and then continued to El Paso.
The House Ways and Means committee unanimously reported an amendment to the tax bill to prevent a $60 million loss in automobile excise taxes. Taxes take effect June 21, but firms plan to evade by buying now. The amendment makes the sales tax apply on delivery date rather than contract date.
Representative Rainey of Illinois, House Democratic leader, says treasury estimates show a 150,000,000 to 200,000,000 gap to balance the budget. He warns the shortfall could only be met by higher taxes.
Potter County's annual 4-H wardrobe contest will take place Thursday in Amarillo. Exhibits must be delivered to Miss Mary Sitton at the Chamber of Commerce by Wednesday afternoon. A snake crawled across a 23 000 volt line causing a blackout in 15 towns Saturday night. It climbed a pole to prey on a sparrow it had swallowed and was electrocuted by the wires. Repairs fixed switches at Marlin and Mexia plants and a transformer burned at Otto substation northwest of Marlin.
State Senator Emerson L. Richards asserted an investigation of the entire Lindbergh kidnapping case handling was virtually certain. He claimed the Lindbergh case has been slaughtered to celebrate a Democratic holiday as police bulletin shows the investigation again hit a dead end after the Violet Sharpe theory collapsed.
A general rain averaged three quarters of an inch in the North Panhandle with scattered totals along the Rock Island line and Fort Worth Denver route. Showers occurred from Amarillo to Texline and north to the Oklahoma border, while Tulsa and Lubbock reported no rain. Roads remained muddy and travel slow as weather unsettled the region.
London reports the death of Violet Sharpe a English waitress at Englewood New Jersey home. Labor MPs plan to urge the British government to represent to the United States over the death by own action and British papers fault New Jersey police for their Lindbergh case inquiries.
Alpine New Jersey June 13 police rejected claims they pressured Violet Sharpe to death. Col Norman Schwarzkopf head of state police said there was never undue pressure during questioning. He noted that members of the Morrow or Lindbergh households were present on four occasions.
Stanislaus Felix Hausner, New Jersey film operator, exhausted and aboard a ship, cannot yet recount his transatlantic flight attempt toward Poland. He plans to recover in two weeks in New Orleans, while officials abandoned his red monoplane drifted for a week, left 100 miles off Portugal as darkness fell before rescue.
Four persons including two women faced bonds in state and federal liquor cases this morning. Two gallons of whiskey and a car were seized. Mr and Mrs W B Hamilton posted $500 bonds each in Justice Minter's court. T C Curlee and Corrine Hargrove Curlee appeared before the U S commissioner with Curlee held at $750 bond and Mrs Curlee released on her own recognizance. Their automobile was seized.
The Akron reports a northeast course from Mississippi to Atlanta en route to Lakehurst Naval Air Station and expects to land at dawn tomorrow. In Shreveport the craft passed overhead at 2 05 A M on its homeward flight from the Pacific coast, flying smoothly at about 4000 feet.
Speaker John N. Garner, ill with a severe cold, is expected to return to the House Thursday or Friday barring unforeseen complications. He took to bed after a chill in his office Saturday following a cold caught last Friday.
All persons who have paid county and state poll taxes may vote tomorrow from 8 to 7 at Central Fire Station and other designated stations. Locations include areas bounded by Fort Worth and Denver tracks, Tenth Avenue, Rock Island tracks, and city limits. Buchanan School. San Jacinto Fire Station.
Ross D. Rogers H A Daniel and Lon D Marrs appear as options in a city race with voters scratching two names. Rogers pledged to resign from the school board if elected mayor and devote full time to the office. Marrs spoke of strong support and a rally planned at headquarters.
L. B. Breel of Spearman presided the 28th annual Panhandle Bankers Association convention opening session. W. B. Lee of Spur urged prosperity through agriculture and allied industries, not legislation, and CG A. Jay of Dallas called the tax burden reasonable. He urged business methods for issuing bonds by counties cities and schools.
District court opened its weekly docket with several preliminaries and adjourned until 1 30 for Charley Newsom charged with burglary. Judge Bishop granted a postponement in Tom Mitchells liquor case. Horace Miles trial for failure to stop and render aid postponed to next term.
Postmaster W. C. Ken yon announced that letters mailed on or after July 6 will require three cents postage for each ounce or fraction thereof. Air mail letters will cost eight cents for the first ounce and 13 cents for each additional ounce. Postal cards and private mailing cards incur no charge.
Automobile races will be held on July 4 under Fair Association auspices with contests open under national rules. A fireworks display, dance and barbecue are planned that night with low mood prices.
Austin June 13 UP A yield of 31 650 000 bushels of winter wheat from the Western and Piney Plains of Texas was forecast today by the State and Federal Departments of Agriculture. Condition on June 1 was 59 percent of normal versus 77 percent a year ago. Winter wheat production for 1931 was 57 433 000 bushels and the estimated average yield per acre this year is 10 bushels compared with 16.8 last year.
Burglars last night took between 40 and 45 cartons of cigarets from an M System store at 312 East Tenth Avenue. Entrance was gained through a garage at the rear. Police reported another burglary at the Harrison Street Garage, 613 Harrison Street, with tools taken.
