In Dubuque, the Canfield Hotel fire trapped guests as smoke filled the lobby and upper floors. Firefighters rescued about 30 people by nets and 27 by ladders. two leaped to nets and died. Patrolman Byrne O'Brien saved multiple lives before perishing while guiding guests to safety and using fire escapes from the roof. Stanley E. Schibsky, of Minneapolis, had warned the hotel management about second floor safety two weeks earlier.
