Countess in Swindle Tale Nabbed in Washington

Miss Louise Maret, co proprietor of a fashionable girls school, reports being swindled out of 5044 by Countess Grace de Benque and George S. Gormley. Maret says an officer demanded bribe money to drop a Mann Act claim, leading to alleged plans to extract 15000, with Maret offering 5000 in personal notes. Gormley denies knowledge. Maret had lent him 5000 for which he gave a receipt.

Germany Seeks Delay on Debt Moratorium at World Conference

Berlin June 9 Germany hopes world economists will ease burdens so she avoids a partial moratorium on credits starting July 1. Analysts say suspending 80 percent of Reich foreign debt buys time for concessions at the world economic conference. A standstill group in London may offer further aid as talks begin. Debts before 1931 and interest totaling about 17.3 million marks are included.

Mob Storms Jail Inmate Slain In Firefight

Armed men stormed the Scott County jail in Huntsville Tennessee, abducting Jerome Boyett and Harvey Winchester who faced murder charges. Winchester was found dead with bullet wounds about 200 feet from the road between Huntsville and Helen Wood. Boyett remained missing.

Arrest brings Balfe MacDonald case back into view

A 17 year old from Flint Michigan Balfe MacDonald confessed to extortion and was linked to the murder case of his mother Mrs MacDonald found slain May 17 in Nashville Tennessee. He and 16 year old William Terwilliger were charged as murder suspects and fugitives from justice. Michigan officers traveled to Nashville to take charge.
