Wild has resigned. Haines brings twenty years in Texas chamber work, plus railroad experience, and earned the title Colonel from overseas service in Europe. A city welcome rally and formal introduction to the city commission were planned.
The Northwest Texas Methodist Conference committee met with Mayor Leo Bivins and then with L. B. Newby led officials to discuss a possible Methodist College in Amarillo. No results were announced, but a formal statement may follow after the afternoon session with the local executive committee. A rumor of another Panhandle town seeking the college emerged, but Amarillo remains the priority.
Potter county shows a surge in registered vehicles in early 1927 with 15034 motor vehicles licensed since January 1, 1927 by tax collector Bill Collins. Of these 13108 are passenger cars, indicating a 50 percent rise over total 1926 registrations.
The Soviet minister to Poland M Wolkoff was shot and mortally wounded at Warsaw Central Railway Station by 19 year old student Borys Kowarda. Wolkoff later died in hospital as police detained the assailant. A London newspaper disputed the name, calling him Pierre Voykoff, linking him to czarist murder warrants.
Matthew Kimes, armed with two automatics, vanished into the Osage hills near Pawhuska after hijacking a car and kidnapping Red Carter. Peace officers scoured a 15 by 10 mile refuge all night but failed to trap him, leaving him at large despite a life sentence for murder.
Lieutenant Robert H. Gray of Amarillo aims to fly Dallas to Hong Kong for a $25,000 prize offered by William D. Fasterwood of Honolulu. Gray, a former war ace with a local flight school, seeks funding from Mayor Lee Bivins and Neal Griggs to back the venture under Amarillo colors.
Flood crests sweep down the Mississippi and Arkansas rivers threatening flood-swept districts. In Arkansas fields washed weeks ago are being replanted, refugees return then flee again as floods rise. Hoover party surveys conditions for possible second flood with 16,000 to 20,000 homeless.
Amarillo received its first wagonload of new wheat late yesterday afternoon. It was bought by Kearn Grain and Feed Company from W. Prank Winters for $1.25 a bushel with a $10 premium. The grain weighed 61.2 pounds per bushel and graded No 1 dark hard. The shipment was consigned to the Great Vent Mill and Elevator Company.
The News and Globe stop telephone baseball returns due to switchboard congestion and service disruption. Emergency operators are on duty as calls to place fans press for scores overwhelm lines. Reports will be provided to drug stores and major locations via special editions and bulletins.
