The AP reports Vesuvius has erupted with lava and ash clouds moving toward a nearby city. Authorities warn residents to evacuate as seismic activity continues. Emergency measures are being coordinated by local and national agencies.
The third edition of the 1929 Texas legislature convened in Austin with most members in attendance despite statewide floods. The 30 day session will tackle eight goals including state appropriations taxation revenue regulatory controls education highways safety court reform and a stronger blue sky stock law. Governor Moody may submit additional measures and a prison bill may be vetoed. Representative Mauritz pushes for an income tax and new revenue sources as registration fees for autos are debated. Historical records note 1368 bills were offered in the regular session with 353 passed and 373 offered in the first special session with 125 passing.
Torrential rains hail and winds swept Kansas and Missouri damaging buildings and injuring residents. In Wichita a brutal storm wrecked several buildings and near the Swallow factory airports, destroying a Western Air Express tri motor plane valued at 75000 dollars. Windows shattered and trees uprooted.
The Abilene Reporter reports extensive damage across West Texas from wind hail and rain storms on Sunday. Heaviest destruction occurred along the Southwestern and Western borders of Haskell County with a tornado in the Plainview area. Hail stripped a Jud to Rule stretch, crops were ruined on 20000 to 30000 acres and livestock losses included chickens and birds.
Morris Raffkind five years old wandered in Palo Duro canyon for over four hours after going missing at noon yesterday. A search party of more than 100 found him alive around 11 this morning beneath a mesquite bush, unscathed aside from mild chill and hunger. He said he searched for his mother and remarked it had rained last night as rescuers noted light rainfall in the canyon. He was wearing only a bathing suit and straw hat and had initially worried divers who continued to search Palisades lake for a possible body.

The Supreme Court upheld the sentences of Harry F. Sinclair Henry Mason Day and W Sherman Burns for shadowing the Fall Sinclair Teapot Dome jury. William J Burns received a shorter fifteen day sentence disapproved by the court. Sinclair remains jailed for contempt of the Senate.
Eighty five Amarillo business leaders plus a 40 member high school band depart at 10 30 tonight from Santa Fe station for a three day trade tour through the North Plains Central and Eastern Panhandle. They plan visits to 29 towns, with crowds expected at each stop and a goal of distributing souvenirs and keeping canes ready for those who own them.
