Arthur Brisbane surveys the fading glory of Tex Rickard’s million dollar fight. The event loses about 200000 of Rickard’s money as 25 percent tax drains receipts. He plans to stop ringside broadcasts and urges the public to pay to see the next bout.
United Press reports shifting party lines as Democrats abandon low tariff policy. Senator Pittman of Nevada comments on party fears. Governor Smith reassures newspaper men at Hampton Bays. Hoover to hold farming leader conferences in Cedar Rapids August 22–23. Senator Heflin weighs deserting Democrats or voting for Smith. An editorial in Harrisburg challenges Governor Smith. The Harrisburg Patriot paper is led by former DNC chair Vance McCormick. The United Presbyterian Church endorses Hoover. Senator Curtis visits Chicago GOP HQ en route to Topeka for vice presidential nomination notification.
William Allen White withdraws charges against Governor Smith on gambling and prostitution in his assembly record to avoid questioning Smiths motives. He retains his critique of Smiths saloon record and cites a desire for fair treatment and respect for motives, acknowledging Lippman’s input. He notes the broader campaign issue includes Tammany influence and prostitution protection.
Skelly Oil Company report on Byrd-Armstrong No 3 in J. W. Proctor survey eastern Moore county shows 260 barrels daily of 38.1 degree gravity oil corrected. The well topped pay at 3172 feet with depth 3185 feet and elevation 3328 feet. Operators expect completion for a well of at least 500 barrels, linking the Morton well with Hutchinson county pools along a nw trend.

Jose de Leon Toral, pale and resolute, awaits civil court trial for the assassination of General Alvaro Obregon. He offered no defense as police read a lengthy confession detailing the San Angelo murder plot and his motive of dying for Obregon. Toral stated, I am giving my life for his, claiming Obregon’s soul was saved.
Amarillo police recovered eight stolen cars and extensive property including carpets, rugs, jewelry, and tires totaling 19 145 in value. Thirty three cases moved to county or other states. twelve felonies and fifteen misdemeanors sent to county courts, one to other states. Hollywood dispatch notes Ruth Elder stars opposite Richard Dix in a Paramount film with aviation and romance elements.
About 260 textile strikers were arraigned in district court after a rioting charge. National guardsmen aided police as 10,000 protesters sought to free prisoners at the central station. Mill gates were lightly picketed except Whitman mill where hundreds protested.
Sheriff Wiley Pollard confirmed support for Burton Roach in the run-off against Bill Thompson. Roach led the Saturday primary by 468 votes, needing about a third of Pollard and Gus Albright’s total to win.
Judge L Gough president of the Texan Wheat Growers association returned last night from California where he attended the American Institute of Co-Operation at the University of California Berkeley. About 600 attended with delegates from Kansas to the Gulf and from Maine to California. Charles W Hodman of Washington ex-Texan and secretary of the Federated Milk association spoke. he led discussions on plans for a fall meeting of co-operative associations in Chicago.

NASHVILLE Tenn July 31 Miss Margaret Cobb 19 year old UT student beauty spoke for first time after 85 days in total or semi unconsciousness saying I feel fine. She and three others were badly injured May 6 when a car crashed into a tele phone pole fracturing skull and legs. Doctors expect she will recover.
Two bandits in a speedy roadster shot the tires off a taxi cab in New Orleans and then robbed Edward Harrell, a messenger for United States Industrial Alcohol, of 2800 dollars before escaping. Both Harrell and the driver were unharmed.
Kansas City July 8 Sen James A Reed returns to his home town and backs Gov Alfred E Smith in the Missouri state campaign He says nominees must align with Smith on prohibition and that nominating him commits the party to revising or repealing the Eighteenth Amendment He criticizes Charles M Hay for enforcement stance and cites the Houston convention advocating modification of the Volstead Act
William H Edward Stevenson, 31, a Missouri farmer from Sedalia, died at 4 40 this morning at a local tourist camp in Amarillo while touring through Texas with his brother Oscar Stevenson and sister Mrs George W Renfro. He is survived by two more sisters Mrs Anna Dykes of Clarion Wyoming and Mrs Beesie Gant of Winston Missouri. The body will be sent to Sedalia for burial. He was unmarried and a Baptist.
Heavyweight champion Gene Tunney announced his retirement at a luncheon honoring William Muldoon. He said he fought his last professional bout, noted the lack of a current top contender, praised Tex Rickard, and suggested a future in new fields while dodging questions about marriage.
Dr. C Buckner pastor of the First Christian church Topeka Kansas will arrive in Amarillo tomorrow as a guest of WM A Shaw director of religious education. He will confer with church officials regarding accepting the local pastorate following an invitation from the pulpit committee. Blackburn Boxwell ambulance service listed.
Elwood Park will officially open on August six after a Park Commission meeting at city hall. The City Development Board and Park Commission will cooperate on a special program for opening night. Lighting installation, delayed by bad weather, is nearly finished and playground equipment will be ready soon, including nine swings a slider trapeze and other items.
