Cotlee a Washington Democrat promised to “take care of your interests here in Washington” if a $2500 check reached War Department secretary Paul Olson. Olson and Coffee pressed for a payment as Anderson sought a billion dollar Army hospital contract. Anderson related a corridor conversation confirming the $2500 payment to retain Olson as his Washington representative. He denied any campaign expense talk.

Four Die in Hotel Fire in San Francisco
Fire raged through the Herbert Hotel in downtown San Francisco killing four members of a special rescue squad. About 240 guests escaped as sixteen firemen were overcome and hospitalized. The blaze began in the basement and spread to upper floors, with a back flash trapping rescuers before they could exit. Acting Fire Chief Martin Kearns called it the most difficult blaze in ten years.
