Victims Largely Women and Children in Lake Michigan Disaster

The steamer Favorite capsized after a sudden squall on Lake Michigan near Chicago. At least 27 passengers died, mostly women and children, with 76 women and children and several men saved. Deep Rock well in Hartley county yields first crude oil

Deep Rock Oil company’s test on the Lyman Balfour ranch near Channing started filling with crude before noon. The well in Hartley county's southeastern corner, just over the Moore county line, tapped a dolomite formation at 3648 feet after a prior gas flow at 2900 feet. An oil rainbow appeared as drilling penetrated the rock dolomite.

Planes Fail To Find Two Missing Miners

In Yuma area on July 29 two naval planes aided by desert rangers searched for two missing men. Andrew Arsenault, 30, of Welton Arizona, has been lost a week in Castle Dome country fifty miles northwest of Yuma.
