Amarillo citizens began pooling money for a defense fund for Louis Bob Conley, described by a Massachusetts judge as a typical Southern wife beater. Mayor Lawrence Hagg led with 50 dollars, and Arthur Truitt contributed 100 dollars. Conley faces Massachusetts assault and kidnapping charges after his removal hearing in federal court. Contributions are sent to the Conley Defense Fund at First National Bank.

Texas Stores Shun New Mexican Peso
Lower Rio Grande Valley stores are shying away from the Mexican peso and Valley banks are not dealing in it for now. A survey shows only a few Texas border stores still accept pesos while banks halt exchanges until a new rate is fixed. The Texas rate stands at six pesos per US dollar, up from 4.85. Across the border in Reynosa banks offer six to six and a half pesos per dollar. Mexican stores push US currency to minimize exchange gaps.
