Early Texas newspapers show progress over a century
Buckholts Texas July 26 4 Texas newspapers from pioneer days illustrate state growth as it prepared to mark two flags two years hence. The 1819 Nacogdoches edition by Horatio Bigelow preceded the first successful 1830 Texas Gazette now in the Garcia collection at the University of Texas. The 1829 dispatch dated Oct 18 published March 20 1830 contrasts how news was transmitted. The Republican title appeared under Spanish rule. Early editors faced subscriber arrears with measures to curb delinquency. The Telegraph and Texas Register of 1835 lists rates 5 dollars prepaid 6 after six months 7 at year end. The Northern Standard of 1842 notes editors battled grievances aired in print and warns advertising rates double for admissible personal altercations. A Gonzales paper page under masthead carried the Texan Santa Fe expedition report by George Ken.
