CHICAGO July 25 The Chicago Union Stock Yards reopened under an agreement with yard officials and striking handlers to dispose of stock on hand. It was a cleanup market aimed at merciful slaughtering of stock shipped in on ordinary accounts. Officials expected all commercial stock to be cleaned up before 3 o clock. About 5 000 privately owned cattle remained with 65 000 to 70 000 cattle owned by the federal government for relief. There were 5 000 hogs and a few sheep. Striking handlers said they would not interfere if the work avoided strike breakers. Feeding of cattle began by nonunion crews. Reports said handlers for commission men might join the strike at day end, but officials would not comment.
Sidney Wood Jr and Frank Shields earned a two match sweep over Australia to reach the Davis Cup challenge round against England. Wood defeated Jack Crawford in five sets after a rain delay, while Shields beat Vivian McGrath in straight sets to clinch the series. The U S will meet England in a five match series beginning Saturday with further matches next Monday and Tuesday.

In San Francisco on July 25 Millard Hickman a 45 year old marine engineer was acquitted of strangling Louise Jeppesen the Ogden Utah girl murdered in Golden Gate Park last May The judge recommended no sentence as the state had sought the death penalty Hickman remained composed through the trial but his calm gave way after the verdict as he prepared to leave for the city prison with his brother offering congratulations

Elijah H. Stuart, 28, was indicted by a Harris County grand jury for the murder of his 5 year old daughter Dortha. The case alleges death by choking and drowning after his confession and a partially submerged twin in Cypress Creek. He claimed the kill was to collect a $400 life policy on the twins and bury the child to cover expenses.

Allred supporters schedule talks with L McNeill on KGRS at 7 and Charles Betes on WDAG at 6 40 for governor. Dr F N Reynolds of Wheeler slated to speak on WDAG at 7 45 in support of the Amarillo governor candidate.
Edwardsville, Kansas Walter Petzold 33 was struck and killed by a bolt of lightning as he rose to move his family during a thunderstorm. His wife and two children were not hurt.
