International tremor grips Europe with riots in Vienna and royal anxieties as Roumania and Russia loom as postwar powers. In the U S stock markets rise amid summer lull while credit chases borrowers and advertising theory booms alongside a fatal Atlantic City fall.
Lieutenant C. C. Champion of the Navy piloted a powerless Wright Apache from 40,000 to 48,000 feet after engine failure. He landed in a small weed field near the Eleventh street bridge, avoiding catastrophe as barographs later suggested 39,000 feet, not the claimed 48,000. He saved the damaged instruments amid fire and escaping flames.
The flying boat Whale piloted by Capt. F. T. Courtney completed a successful test flight from Calshot. He established clear communications with Niton Pierless and Calshot stations and said only favorable weather stands in the way before a New York flight.
Amarillo merchants join The Globe News to celebrate Suburban Day next Thursday July 28. The plan promotes unusually low prices on all goods from clothing to furniture, hardware and shoes to attract shoppers from surrounding towns. Window cards and Wednesday ads will guide visitors to the best values as the slogan urges customers to buy locally.
Four detained including F Creigh Nelson in Seattle as police probe the death of Violet Maude Payne an 84 year old music teacher who vanished after a party on a yacht. Investigators seek to clarify circumstances surrounding the disappearance and death.
Four prisoners including F E Barrington skipper A F Bell Mrs A F Gorman and Nelson attended a party aboard Nelson s yacht where Miss Payne vanished after slipping into Lake Union. Autopsy failed to determine cause of death and officers pursue a second exam.
Tim Mara files suit in New York Supreme Court seeking ten percent of the $200,000 Tunney earned for defeating Jack Dempsey and twenty five percent of earnings since then. The heavyweight champion Gene Tunney and his manager Billy Gibson are named in the action.
Crowds from surrounding areas gather in Franklin for the murder trial of Ada Bonner Leboeuf Dr. Thomas Dreher and James Beadle in the death of James Leboeuf. The victim was found three weeks earlier in Lake Palourde near Morgan City with railroad angle irons attached to his body.
Col. Charles A. Lindbergh landed at Concord airport at 1 22 this afternoon completing the fourth leg of his national aviation tour. He circled the field twice before landing.
George Plunkett and nine co defendants arrested on a conspiracy charge in connection with Vice President Kevin O Higgins assassination were discharged today as no evidence was offered.

R A Cartel chief engineer of the helium division of the bureau of mines has left Fort Worth for Amarillo to study helium production prospects. He recently suggested a helium plant could be built at Amarillo and hinted that equipment from Texas's only helium plant might be relocated there.
Federal agent Marres Clifton Davidson a 23 year old cosmetic salesman was seized as a suspect in an auto theft ring blamed for over 200 cars stolen across states. Cars were moved from their origin states, altered by engine and body changes, and sold to innocent buyers. Davidson is charged with stealing a Fort Worth auto and transporting it to Long Beach for sale. Investigations expect more arrests and indictments of about a dozen affluent men in California Texas New Mexico and Arizona.
City engineers prepare plans for three viaducts crossing Fort Worth and Denver Rock Island tracks. A rough sketch, specifications, and cost estimate may be submitted to the city commission in regular session Tuesday night. Plans focus on site choices at Fillmore Buchanan and West Third West Fourth streets with West Eighth crossing over the tracks.
W. W. Henderson of 1501 Polk street suffered severe bruising and possible internal injuries when his car veered off the road between Vega and Amarillo after being blinded by oncoming headlights. He was treated at Northwest Texas hospital. another passenger escaped with minor bruises. A woman in the other car reportedly broke an arm and was taken to Vega for care. Henderson faces several days bedridden.
City water department reports contracts and receipts prepared for all users except amount date and signatures. Thomas F. Cartwright says 9 000 patrons and deposits due by August 1 as city prepares to assume full plant operation. Deposits come in at 300 daily with two windows open and four later. Patrons urged to mail deposits to avoid rush.
Adjutant James F. Barton general secretary of the American Legion traveled to Paris and gave the mother of Charles Nungesser a sympathy message for her missing son. The message had been entrusted to Barton before he left the United States.
Judge James A. Graham of Brownsville, the first chief justice of the court of civil appeals here in 1911, is visiting Amarillo this week. He moved to Brownsville in 1912.
Hansford county residents contest a proposed August 6 county seat election citing a 1920s law change. The case tests whether the amended statute requires a two year wait or merely reduces the waiting period, renewing a contest after Spearman and Gruver gain railroad access. No decision was announced by the Court of Civil Appeals.
Inspector C. Penny of the U S Secret Service arrived to assist in locating a band of petty counterfeiters. He met local race track followers and may proceed to Salt Lake City after a conference. Detective H C Dewitt and Charley Purcell reported no arrests. About $200 in counterfeit ten dollar bills circulated locally, traced to hangers on at the horse races.
