Navy Reopens Attack on Jap Coast Fighter Pilots Hit Factories

Acting for the President a Navy captain presented the Medal of Honor posthumously to Mrs. Lillabel Roan in Claude. Private First Class Charles H. Roan of the Seventh Marines died saving four comrades on Peleliu. The ceremony highlighted a long wait for the family and followed Roan’s prior service at Cape Gloucester and initial enlistment in Oklahoma City.

Medals of Honor Highlight Seven Texas Plainsmen

Seven Texas Panhandle men are noted for Medal of Honor awards. Six Army scouts earned honors in 1874 at Buffalo Wallow Hutchinson County. Billy Dixon’s Medal is at Panhandle-Plains Museum Canyon. Charles H. Roan of Claude earned one for heroism in a grenade incident overseas.

Ol Man River Trip Ends With Car Stuck At River

James Craig and two actresses Dorothy Patrick and Peggy O Neil found themselves stranded when their car sank into the Canadian River at Tascosa crossing. Craig waded ashore with Dorothy while Peggy urged a swift rescue. Craig returned with equipment to pull the sedan free as director Roy Roland complained of a two hour delay.

Amarillo Men Return From Queen Elizabeth Voyage

Four Amarillo men listed as rivals aboard the Queen Mary when it docked in New York last Friday. The returnees are Staff Sergeant Gilbert Conner of 803 Monroe, Private First Class Oscar G. Grisham of 515 North Fifth, Private First Class Robert J. Brecht of 507 Prospect, and Private Talmadge D. O Quin of 2803 West Third.

P-38 Sets American Altitude Record

In Burbank on July 21, 1943 report states test pilot Joe Towle and Col. Randolph Lovelace set an unofficial American altitude record of 44 904 feet in a two seated Lockheed P 38 Lightning. The flight used a new oxygen mask for B 29 crews and occurred April 30, 1943.
