Twenty eight Pacific war veterans from the College of the Pacific in Stockton California volunteered to restore a desecrated Japanese cemetery near campus. The burial ground was torn up after Pearl Harbor and veterans are filling holes, resetting headstones, reseeding plots, and plan to care for the graves until Japanese return to tend them.
Police and the coroner probed the deaths of two sailors at St Elizabeths Hospital for mental cases in Washington. Clark J. Leeper of Phoenix died from a liver rupture after a heavy blow in solitary confinement. Howard J. Crandall of San Diego died from injuries after an incident during an escape attempt. Three attendants faced a coroner's inquest.
In St Wolfgang Austria on July 24 King Leopold III of Belgium says he will not yield the throne while Belgians lack a democratic chance to choose leaders in a free and honest election. He surrendered Belgium to the Germans in May 1940, a point cited as a key complaint by some Belgians.
The Buenos Aires Critica claims a German submarine was surrounded by Argentine naval units off the coast. The report is unconfirmed and Critica is the sole newspaper carrying the item.
Army and Navy combat casualties since the war began now total 1,053,101 with 244,810 killed 639,048 wounded 47,734 missing and 121,509 taken prisoner. The weekly increase was 3,997, one of the smallest in months. Army losses 917,442 and Navy 135,659.

President Truman, at a Berlin flagraising, declared the United States seeks peace and prosperity for the world, not any territorial gain. He tied the moment to the Big Three talks with Stalin and Churchill, stressing the aim of a peaceful postwar order and urging mobilization of victory for mankind.
President Truman played Beethoven's Minuet in G on the piano at the joint request of Premier Stalin and Prime Minister Churchill as a musical climax to the state dinner. An American sergeant pianist, Eugene List, had earlier earned two toasts from Stalin and a handshake from Churchill for his virtuosity.
The House completed action on a corporate tax bill boosting the excess profits exemption from 10 000 to 25 000 and speeding up more than 5 billion dollars in tax refunds. Chairman Robert L. Coughton of the Ways and Means Committee oversaw the measure written into the bill by the Senate. The bill aims to aid industrial reconversion and does not affect individual taxes.
In Austin on July 20 it was announced that graduate deans from Texas and Oklahoma colleges will meet in Prairie View of Dallas on August 23 and 24 to discuss higher education improvements for Negroes. The gathering is one of five such conferences planned across the South, noted by University of Texas Graduate Dean A. P. Brogan.

HALIFAX July 20 Evacuees return to their explosion rocked homes as naval firefighters battled flames at the Burnside arsenal after a series of blasts that killed one and injured at least 17. Police reported four civilians missing as fires, still burning on the 600 acre site seven miles from the city, were brought under control with a remote likelihood of further blasts.
The U S Weather Bureau reports the tropical storm in the Gulf of Mexico has moved little in the last hours and remains centered about 180 miles south of Lake Charles Louisiana.
J. S. Harrison of Panhandle Texas will become Guthrie city manager within 30 days, announced mayor W. R. Fry. Harrison has been city manager at Panhandle for three years, while Fry has been serving as acting manager for several months.
The forecast notes hot weather will continue with temperatures near 93. Partly cloudy conditions are expected today and tomorrow according to the weather bureau.
Japan feared another strike as Adm William Halsey’s combined fleet moved off the Japanese coast. American air forces bombarded Honshu centers, burning five war hubs in a record Superfortress raid. Nimitz reported additional sinkings off Korea and heavy bombing of Kyushu and Osaka regions. Chinese and Allied forces pushed toward key targets in China and Borneo as fighting intensified across the Pacific theater.
The United States presses Britain to absorb Suez Canal tolls on American ships redeploying to the Pacific. U S paid about 11.3 million dollars in tolls to Jan 1 1945 while lending Panama Canal charges on British ships. Negotiations with Britain over Suez charges continue after prior refusals.
Dayton July 20. Tactical air operations against Japan may be cut back within two weeks unless the Detroit U S Rubber Co plant strike ends immediately. Maj Gen Lester T Miller deputy commander of the Air Technical Service Command said.
Madrid July 20 authoritative sources said Gen Francisco Franco planned a sweeping reorganization to break the Falange and ease Spain back into UN favor. A formal announcement was expected today or within three to four days.
In Boston the SS Mariposa discharged 2,833 veterans, two thirds sick or wounded, as Lt Gen Ben Lear praised their conduct and sacrifice. Crowds cheered or booed as the ship arrived, while Lear gave a proud interview about American soldiers’ mettle on and off the battlefield.
Army seizes five Montgomery Ward units in Chicago under a presidential order dating from December 1944 after a prolonged labor dispute. Maj. Gen. David McCoach Jr. says the Schwinn warehouse, display factory, central printing, photographic, and maintenance departments fall under seizure. Ward's spokesperson declines comment.
Premier T. V. Soong, back in Chungking from Moscow, told the People's Political Council that Japan would be defeated this year or early 1946. He outlined immediate government reorganization to build the strongest postwar reconstruction machinery and said U S plans for boosting China's industry and economy had been arranged.
The War Production Board and the Office of Price Administration announced that rationing of gas cooking and gas heating stoves for civilian consumers ends July 31. Rationing also ends for combination ranges that do not mix oil and gas. Oil cooking and oil heating stoves and oil conversion burners remain rationed.
The Berliner Zeitung estimates more than half of Berlin's 1.5 million homes were destroyed in the war. It would take 20 years to rebuild at pre war rates, cost around two billion dollars using pre war mark values, though the military government values the mark at 10 cents.
Gov. Coke R. Stevenson announced Texas will proclaim Thanksgiving for November 22, the fourth Thursday. The decision follows business requests and a commitment to align with federal law this year. November has five Thursdays this year.
Seven ships dock in New York with 31,455 Allied troops from Europe the largest single-day return since VE Day. The 44th Infantry Division led by Maj. Gen. William F. Dean arrives aboard the Queen Elizabeth, while other transports carry units from the Second Indian Head Division and the Fifth Infantry Division. Additional ships include Le Jeune and the Bret Harte, with hundreds of gIs and POWs, to be processed at Camp Shanks.
