Kansas City markets show hogs selling 14.35 to 14.55 for 170-230 lb hogs with limited heavy weights activity. Jack Johnson the first Negro world heavyweight champion rests in Amarillo on a trek to Los Angeles for army physical training work. The 65 year old, in strong condition, says he can still move as fast as any man and hopes to help national youth as he once did in boxing. He recalls 90 pro bouts with 30 knockouts and 35 decisions, noting his high-reaching career including wins over Burns and Jeffries and a later loss to Willard.
The Army Transport Command begins using commercial airlines to move military personnel and material to all war theaters. Brig. Gen. Harold L. George says nine commercial firms will participate, supplementing sea cargoes with air routes flown by airline staff and serviced by the firms.
Amarillo aims to collect 7000 phonograph records for military entertainment. 13000 discs sat in depot displays at 412 Polk Street last night, organized by A K Baracat, the collection chairman. Volunteers push donations to reach the quota before the national drive ends.
Greek Premier Emmanuel Tsouderos declared that 1 000 Greeks died of starvation daily last winter and were buried in common graves. He attributed continued deaths to German and Italian refusal to approve distribution of Canadian wheat shipments to Greece. Some aid arrived from Turkey and the Middle East as air routes are set by the Allied air transport command.
Major Jay Taylor of Ordnance, U S A, is home on a short leave after reporting to Washington and being assigned to a California station. An incident earlier involved tear gas and gunfire at an alley house where Sergeant T W Lewis found Lindley dead from chest wounds. Also noted, about 88,000 opossum skins were sold in a single day in Dunedin, New Zealand.
Summary indicates petty offenses including parking violations and dice games brought in $224 yesterday. Traffic tickets added $91 in corporation court, with the two day total reaching $438.
In Galveston a traffic officer, Frank Marchesi, and E. B. Lindley a ships carpenter were shot to death as police answered a call to a garage apartment. Marchesi was struck by gunfire at six yards as officers approached, and the house was surrounded by responding police.
